On this episode, Joel ferries a helicopter from Germany back to Saudi Arabia.
Joel went to training in Italy for six days, and while he was there, his company asked him to fly to Germany, pick up a helicopter, and fly it back to Saudi Arabia. There was only one problem: the weather did not look good.
He spent several days watching the weather and planning the route. This was a difficult process because the route had to be approved by people in his company who are not pilots. Some of them do not understand the aircraft's limitations, including the speed at which the aircraft can travel and the distance it can travel with the amount of fuel it can hold.
But after a lot of work, they finally figured it out, so Joel set out for Germany. The weather was not good for several days, but it allowed Joel to explore the little town, and he was amazed by all of the produce growing around town.
Finally, on the third day, they got a break in the weather and got out of there fast. They needed to act quickly because another system was building, and they didn't want to get stuck for longer. Luckily, excellent planning and even stellar piloting got them out of the Alps and into southern Italy without any issues.
Because of the helicopter's fuel range, they had to stop, which made for some very long days. Luckily, he could have a short day in Cyprus. I was adamant that he was to explore the ruins all over this island. He didn't go where I wanted him to, but he accidentally stumbled upon some ruins by his hotel.
After Cyprus, he had to go to Egypt, and they were anything but fast, helpful, and attentive! On the way from Port Said, Egypt, to Cairo, they were re-routed 1/2 way back to Cyprus, adding several hours to their trip. Once in Cairo, they encountered many issues with customs, immigration, and ground crew. This delayed them for several more hours, which caused them to get into Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, late.
The next day, they were on their way again and finally made it home to us on the East coast of Saudi Arabia.
After being gone for several weeks, it was nice to have him home.
