I agree - Jerry is one of my favorites on youtube. I love great story telling. Some other favorites are Bob Gymlan, MrBallen and David Paulides but none of those are about the great days and actors of Hollywood movies - more about missing people and Sasquatch experiences. Still, great story telling all around and that is an art form not many people master like Jerry has. He's a real gem.

Lost count how many times me and my dad sat and watched 'Ride The High Country'. Westerns are just so rewatchable, especially with actors like Joel McCrea. My dads gone now, but I'll continue to appreciate the films and actors he got me into. Thanks for the upload.

Jerry thank you so much again a wonderful video. Joel McCrea was one of my favorite actors. They show his films on INSP on cable. I watched his films everytime one is playing. He was a very handsome man as well as a great actor. I hate to say this I hope it doesn't offend anyone but all the actors are gone or don't do acting anymore. Breaks my heart. But thank goodness we have them in their films. Jerry again a thank you. The time it takes to put one of these together has to takes hours of research.

Thanks for this wonderful biography. I’ve recently come into contact with Joel McCrea’s movies and really like them. My favorite one so far is The More the Merrier, which won the Oscar for best film of 1943. It’s a really fun film and Jean Arthur and Charles Coburn are also in it. Coburn won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for that film.

He was a fine actor. My favorites he did was.... Sullivan's Travels 1941 ( with a young Veronica Lake who is simply stunning in this film ! ) A must see classic movie. The More the Merrier 1943, very good comedy. Ride the High Country 1962 ,directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Randolph Scott. It has a great all around cast in the movie and is my favorite western he did. The Virginian 1946 is pretty good too.

Great actor. A natural, as Jerry said. He never seemed to be "acting", which is one of the rarest gifts an actor could have. "Ride the High Country" is now considered one of the greatest westerns ever made. At the time of its release in 1962 it went mostly unnoticed by critics, but the eminent NY Times film critic Bosley Crowther loved it, calling it a "perfectly dandy little western", and the film was much admired in Europe, where it won first prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
@monaleigh1862

I didn't realize how great of an actor he was until I saw him on the show "This Is Your Life" when he thought he was there to honor another actor but was actually there to get honored himself. They surprised him with old friends and both Jody and David were there to honor their father as well. Joel was so moved by it all that he could barely speak at times - he was actually very humble about his talent and thought many actors were much better than he was. I disagree - after seeing his humility and quiet response to being so honored it was obvious that the characters he played he was really playing - it wasn't just him acting like himself - it was him using his fantastic acting skills. Not a lot of people know this but it was the powerful leading actresses of his era that made him famous - they kept developing crushes on him and falling in love with him as Barbara Stanwyck did and they kept insisting that they wanted to play opposite Joel - Jean Arthur was so smitten with him that she got physically nauseated every time they were going to film a scene together in "The More The Merrier" which was another fantastic film of Joel's. He was very impressive and talented. He also loved to sing and had a great voice with a range that spanned the baritone and tenor scales. I miss him very, very much.

If there's any doubt as to McCrea's cowboy cred, watch his movie, Four Faces West, where, on the run from the law, he saddle breaks a longhorn steer and rides him through the desert. I don't think anyone but McCrea could have done the wrangling for such a totally awesome feat.

Joel has always been one of my favorite actors from old Hollywood. I read once that he was such a natural actor he didn't need or do acting lessons. i was hoping you'd do an episode of Joel McCrea. I grew up in 1000 oaks and our house was adjacent to his property. This was in the early 70's and he would ride his horse right up to our backyard and give me and my sister rides. He was a very nice and likable man as well as his wife. His grandson Wyatt owns the house Joel bought in the 40's and before covid he would have outdoor movies in the summer of his Grandpas pictures.

Oh my gosh Jerry - my name isn't Monica - it is Mona. My channels here on youtube are monahawk and there is one called Mona Leigh. I can't thank you enough for doing this piece on Joel - he was such a special and humble human being. Did you know that Katherine Hepburn said of Joel's acting ability that he was as good if not better than Spencer Tracy or Humphrey Bogert? She did. I have a gift that Katherine gave to Joel many decades ago which my brother Peter sent to me after we found each other. Long story. Even though Frances and Joel had their very difficult times in their marriage they truly loved each other and worked through all of the difficulties a Hollywood marriage can bring and she was by his side when he passed...on the anniversary of their wedding - giving new meaning to "until death do we part". I never got to meet Frances but I really wish I had. I did meet my grandmother, Louise Whipple McCrea - she was an awesome lady but didn't want to get to know me...understandable. Thanks again Jerry - you're a sweetheart...and I have been watching your videos for quite some while. I always enjoy them very much. Mona Leigh McCrea

@maxmankid What happened to the child out of wedock? That must have been hard for both Joel and his wife. I'm glad they got back together again. I respect Joel. And both he and Randolp Scott were GREAT in Ride the High Country. I just saw it again the other day. I'm an old gramma now, 81, and I loved spending time with horses on my grampa's dairy farm when I was a kid. Oh, how times have changed. I miss the old values and simple life.
