Joel & Midge - I Miss You, I'm Sorry

WARNING: LONG POST lol Okay, I know the season 4 finale was a big one for a different ship and I know I am in the minority for shipping these two. But I can’t help it. And I also can’t help but think it’s not a coincidence that Midge finally went for it with Lenny right after learning about Joel and Mei’s baby and possible marriage. And literally right after her set where she states she and Joel are still “something.” Not to mention how jealous she obviously was when Mei showed up at the hospital. That’s totally how you act when you are over someone and ready to move onto someone else. Plus, how many times do they still refer to each other as husband/wife and Susie has to correct them? I don’t know. I just think a lot of their interactions are always very telling.
I don’t want to disparage any other ships, and I do think that Rachel and Luke have great chemistry, it’s just hard for me to root for a couple where one half was a real life figure with a tragic end. There can be no happy ending there. Plus, other than her career, I do not see Lenny ever really fitting into Midge’s life. But I will not get into that here. I also like Mei, but again, I have a hard time seeing her integrate into all the areas of Joel’s life…but then again, we (like him) know so little about her.
I think Joel & Midge will obviously always love each other and will always be…something. There is just too much history and too much love shared. , I don’t think season 4 was as well executed as some of the other seasons (which I think is a fairly common opinion) but I still enjoyed it and I’m excited to see where everything goes next year. I do hope a lot of the things they set up this season that weren’t resolved get tied up.

I usually don't support people getting back together with someone that cheated on them, but these two are the expection. When they were first married, they were no longer the person the other had met and fallen in love. When they met, they were young and carefree. Joel made Midge laugh, and she was spontanius. When they were first married, they had become people they thought that they had to be. A stereotypical 1950s couple. Midge was a housewife, which she would have grown bored of eventually, while Joel was working a dead-end job that he hated and was bad at, while failing at being a comic. After the divorce, they became their true authentic self, and had finally become the people they had met and fallen in love with. Midge had become a comic, while Joel had become a succesful nightclub owner. Joel is also one of the few people who always supports Midge's career, and always belives that Suzie knows best when it comes to Midge's career.

The hurt person, that I think most of us possess, wants Midge to never get back with Joel for what he did, but the romantic within me wants Midge and Joel to reconcile and stay with each other for good. I think he has worked hard to redeem himself. I can't get over the way they still look at each other, it's full of love and longing. Like it gives me that awww feeling but also makes me want to cry because they have both hurt each other. It's like loving someone but also feeling sadness. Kind of like still being in love but feeling the end approaching. I hope they forgive each other and get back to just loving each other and being together. Joel and Midge 4ever❤️

Hundred percent agree. And it’s the way they look at each for me too. But I didn’t re-watch the other seasons. When did Midge hurt Joel?

@@misscompassionate Midge didn't hurt Joel intentionally, but he felt hurt when he found out about Benjamin. Remember how angry he was? He went for a late night batting session with his friend. I hope they really do get back together for good. She can do stand up comedy at his bar when she's not on tour.

I think you’ll get your wish in S5. We all know Midge and Lenny won’t last for obvious reasons. I think Joel will also end things with Mei when he learns she had an abortion while she was out of town at the end of S4. Or worse, she’ll die on the table while having it.

I know this season ending was just a riot for another ship but... I feel like they show us how much Midge still knows Joel. Like, all the hospital scenes... ok yeah Mei was there, she is the one who can hug him but... they are still something. Maybe Lenny is the epic love, but Joel is the love of her life.

I think that they still love each other, their love is too big . Mei and Lenny are another sort of love... Joel tells to Susie that he would have loved forever Miriam and in my heart I want they back as a couple..hope in happy Ending lol

wow thank you, fellow Joel & Midge shipper. They are endgame for me. I absolutely love midge and lenny. The chemistry is off the charts, but something feels so GOOD about Joel & Midge. Feels like they'll always be at home with each other.

You're not alone in this ship. Great vid and I agree with most of your points. I have more and more the feeling that Midge will end up alone (with distractions along the way with Lenny or other men) like she envisionned back in season 2 and that Joel and Mei will make their relationship work somehow but I can't help to ship Midge and Joel all the same. We will see where the last season takes us.

Hey there :) Lovely vid. I'm a bit of a multi-shipper, because I like Midge with Joel and Lenny. I do just want to say and please don't take this the wrong way because I can totally see the validity in what you wrote in your post, but for the sake of a different POV, I actually don't think Midge slept with Lenny out of some sort of reaction to seeing Joel with Mei. She definitely felt some kind of way when she saw Joel being comforted with Mei, but that's only natural. Whether it was actual jealousy or just feeling weird/sad at seeing your ex husband being so intimate with someone else right in front of you - that's up for interpretation, of course. In any case, I think ASP purposefully included Milo's character in the previous episode because it showed Midge having a fairly casual sexual encounter which meant that it wouldn't be so jarring when Midge and Lenny hooked up in the next one. It showed that Midge isn't so frigid with those kinds of things. Another reason I don't see Midge sleeping with Lenny as a reaction to Joel is because it's not like she sought out Lenny; he came to her, and then by a random series of events, they ended up at his hotel. TBH, I think Joel was the last person on her mind in that hotel room. Midge/Lenny have enough of a history to carry them towards sleeping together without any needed outside "help". All that being said, I don't think Lenny/Midge are endgame at all, and I think there is time for her and Joel to reconcile, but I'm also totally open for her not ending up with anyone when the show ends. Anyway, sorry for such a long response lol, but as someone who ships both, I thought I'd offer a counter to your opinion. :) Please make more Joel/Midge vids though as there aren't enough on here and yours was beautifully done!!

No I agree. I didn’t mean it to sound like I think that is the reason I think she slept with Lenny. I think that obviously her choosing to sleep with Lenny was both a bit a long time coming and when the perfect opportunity presented itself, why not? They are both single after all. I don’t think she was thinking of Joel either, I think she was in the moment. I was just saying, from a storytelling perspective, it was interesting timing that that is when they decided to have them go for it. It’s not like the opportunity hasn’t presented itself before. And I do actually like midge and Lenny’s relationship on the show and, like I said, I think Rachel and Luke have good chemistry. So I have no problem with their scenes or what happened. And I can totally see why so many people ship them. I just can’t in good conscience, totally get behind them being together romantically because of everything that happens in real life. Not just that he dies, but knowing he was a real life person with very real struggles that only get worse the closer we get in this timeline. And they’ve hinted at that in the show, so I dont know…I don’t know if that makes sense. But now I’ve written a long post lol

I agree, plus in the hotel room there was nothing at all rushed, impatient, or anxious about their interactions which is interesting because less than an hour ago she was in such a hurry to get back to the hospital. With Lenny she was completely relaxed and flirty but she didn’t jump into anything either, she actually had to think it over and there’s even an implication she spent most of the day with him afterward since she wasn’t seen at Moishe’s bedside the next day. Really though, how many people end up falling in love with addicts anyway? Sure they’re probably not going to be endgame, but I do think they will continue having a unique clandestine relationship over the course of his life and that’s really all I’m hoping for.

People make mistakes, and they deserve to live with the consequences of their acts, which he is. He lost the love of his life, and now he gets to spend the rest of his life being at her side as her friend, confidant, and partner in raising their children, but he will never really have her again. Its tragic, and he isn't an awful person, but he is living with the consequences forever.
