The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast

Күн бұрын

Fox Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt sits down with Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian in this episode of The Joel Klatt Show: Big Noon Conversations. They discuss the pressure that comes with being the Head Coach at Texas and how the move to the SEC will affect his program. The Longhorns coach reflects on what he learned from his two coaching mentors that both stepped away from the sport this offseason - Nick Saban and Pete Carroll - and reveals what he believes was the key to their incredible success. The two also discuss the commonality they share as they discuss sobriety and how being vulnerable in his own life has impacted Sarkisian’s culture-building within his program. Lastly, Coach Sark reveals his best and worst playcalls of his career - with his worst playcall ultimately leading to an iconic moment in Texas history.

Full disclosure, I’m a Michigan fan. Much respect to Coach Sark for taking that Texas program and focusing it in the way he has. Of course I’m hopeful my boys can beat the doors off his Longhorns when they come to our place this fall, but regardless of how that turns out, it’s a real privilege to host Texas. On a more important note, thank you for mentioning sobriety, and personal struggles that transcend sports. Our lives and how live before God, ourselves, and our loved ones is so much more important and significant than anything that takes place on a football field. Best to both of you in your recoveries.

I love having him as the coach at Texas. There were “fans” calling for him to be gone after the first year, but he just needed time to get the team where he wanted it. Those same “fans” are now eating crow. Texas might lose a couple games this season, but with the expanded playoff, that’s okay. I am excited for the future of this team. There is something special in the works at Texas. They better hold on to Sark, because the NFL will be knocking at his door soon.

We need more of this and less of the nonsense on TV from presenters that don't really add/bring anything of importance(not Joel clearly). So you didn't see Florida's schedule? OU fans don't whine about schedules. We are chasing nattys. So if we are good enough to win a natty, the schedule doesn't matter. If we get beat, then we weren't good enough to win a natty anyway. It works itself out, just fine.

Historically, OU and Texas have had similar schedules. In the last 15 years, Texas has 3 10+ win seasons while OU has 11. In that stretch, OU hasn't had two consecutive seasons of less than 10 wins while in that same time range, Texas hasn't had consecutive 10+ win seasons. Sark has had 1 season of more than 10 wins in his career. History says OU will be just fine.

this might be the most pathetic post I've seen this year. Are you 13 years old? Is your ego so fragile you can't handle a coach not named Venables getting an interview? JFC lol. Texas was a playoff team that won the conference and is moving to a new one. If you can't understand why he'd want to interview the head coach then you should probably mature a little.

I am 100% serious.. What will I Klatt do after Kirby and the Bulldogs heads back to Arena after humiliating Sarkisian at DKR which isn't really news. Texas head coaches enjoy treating the long horn faithful to a one loss .Charlie did it 9 times and Mr Kiss had 8 and even good ole Mack lost 18 games at DKR and it would be woest if I had to throw in all the losses in Dallas. So after OU beats Texas AGAIN 17 times since 2000... And the Bulldogs tell the Big 12.. Not your 1st season...What kind of spin will Platt dream up for Sarkisian....Will it be? Sarkisian is still putting the pieces together? Or He needs the Hall of fame son to take the reins? This will mean another Texas QB leaves Texas with a losing record except for only Colt...He's the only one to be above .500 @ 3-1... But again...OU took the Big 12 title 3 of the 4 Colt seasons leaving Colt McCoy with only 1 Big 12 title...

College football has become a public display of what is both great and awful about our culture. Win at all costs, spend disgusting money to do it, replace coaches if they don’t very quickly, allure players with cash and cars, etc. Competition is great- as it pushes people to be great at something. All in on that. But, the cost of making this about money more than the culture of programs, the student athlete getting a degree, and the team staying together for 3-4 years to become known by teammates and fans- GONE! This is a transactional sport now focusing on individuals instead of teams. Steve is a shining example of someone who will do whatever it takes to win. Would I trust him with my kid? Probably not. I have followed him since UW and he has left a trail of smoke including at USC. Maybe he has changed somewhat but he presents something publicly that I am not certain is who he really is. Culture of vulnerability and love = Sarks tactics to achieve his objective.
