Allen Bestwick's Best Calls in NASCAR #1

Allen Bestwick worked as NASCAR on NBC's lead announcer from 2001-2004, and later picked up that role for ESPN from 2011-2014. In my opinion, Bestwick is one of, if not, the best lead announcer NASCAR has had in the 21st century. With him not commentating any motorsport at the moment, we can all hope that this lead announcer finds some role back into NASCAR.
For this part, I focused on Bestwick's roles with NBC/TNT from 2001-2004, and his early ESPN days, 2010-2012. Next part will continue with his later ESPN years.

I never cared for Ken Squier. He comes across as a bit of a dim bulb to me. Mike Joy is OK. Eli Gold and Bob Jenkins were both solid good. Allen Bestwick is great, and the greatest ever to me are Barney Hall and Joe Moore.

Allen Bestwick has such a great voice for commentating. In the Nascar Heat games and Nascar D2D, I really grew to enjoy his explanations of certain Nascar aspects.

NBC’s biggest mistake after ESPN stopped broadcasting was taking Rick Allan over Allen Bestwick. In my opinion, Allen Bestwick is one of the top 3 commentators NASCAR has EVER had. He was clear, easy to understand, and most importantly, exciting. Bestwick has the most memorable calls in NASCAR from my memory at least. At least IndyCar has Bestwick for a few races, including the Indy 500. By the way, my personal favorite call was when he called Jeff Gordon’s 83rd win at Atlanta in 2011.

Good lord do I miss Allen Bestwick. The night race at Bristol was always a million times better with him and Wally and BP because of their ability to go from goofing on angry drivers to seriously calling the race and back without missing a beat. I'd love to see Bestwick and Dallenbach reunited.

Allen Bestwick is BY FAR my favorite announcer of all time- my first year as a fan was 2002, and I've loved him ever since. Hope he comes back to NBC really soon, Rick Allen has NOTHING on Allen!

That NBC was practically a test drive, so to speak. Sure, introduced Allen Bestwick (1999/2000) as well as Benny Parsons (2000), Dave Burns (2000), Marty Snider (1999/2000), Mike Massaro (1999/2000) and Dorsey Schroeder (1999) to the network but it also brought Brian Williams (1999) and Joe Gibbs (1999) to hosting commentary positions.

Alan made the races so exciting just by his excitement. 2002 Daytona 500. Watching those 2 Dodges go down the back stretch, is like letting 2 Thoroughbreds loose lol. McMurrays win in his 2nd career race, just proved how bad ass that #40 Coors light silver bullet was that Sterling Marlin piloted. To bad Marlin got hurt that year bc I feel like Marlin had that championship wrapped up. Nadeau's loss to Labonte running out of fuel was so heart breaking. He should have went down pit road to shorten the distance. LoL Also... It's funny how a lot of his best calls is when Jr would win. I really think beating was a Jr fan. We miss you Alan.

I don't love NASCAR like I used to, but I want to. Bestwick, Benny and Wally were great but even this trio would struggle to captivate audiences with current Fox ill timed shots and commercial breaks, head scratching decisions. Can't be sure exactly but it seems now the lead producer makes bad calls and prerace script takes priority over race feel and developments. Maybe for fear the audience won't see it, the crew too often hesitates to allow their genuine excitement to show. They seem afraid to get off script to follow spontaneous action. If so, this would hamstring many commentators. Hard to steer your attention and manufacture excitement on producers cue when they might be watching more exciting situations on track and are at odds with production decisions. Whatever the cause, we routinely get moments where cameras aren't showing us what the crew wants to speak on. The crew seems to have trouble staying on same page with production room or vise versa. Maybe production isn't equipped to move cameras to developments that commentators instinctively see. Maybe it's a low budget, understaffed production with too limited options. Low confidence from crew that audience will see noteworthy action may be causing too much hesitation, thus getting hushed tone "wow" when something noteworthy occurs, instead of authentic excitement we hear in this video. Bottom line is audiences will respond positively to authentic excitement and NASCAR knows this. I don't believe our current commentators aren't excited about races but we sure don't hear their excitement often enough. I believe they want to show excitement but for some reason they don't feel able to let it rip. It's easier for me to believe producers now don't trust the crew, or, can't get cameras on what the crew sees as meaningful, on a moments notice, so in prep they decide to limit what crew can talk about. Whatever the reasons for our current trudging through races NASCAR better find a way to improve because audiences don't tune in to bad tv. We just won't watch 36 bad 4 hour races with 45 minutes of commercials in each
