For insight into your question "will lithium ion batteries keep improving faster than solid state can be brought online", check out gallium arsenide vs silicon in the 80’s electronic industry. Every couple of years you would hear that silicon tech was going to hit an impenetrable wall and the only way to make electronics any faster would be to switch to gallium arsenide. Then every few years smart people would find ways under, over and around those walls. Over 3 decades later, gallium arsenide is still waiting for its day to shine
@TimothyParker1
@TimothyParker1 4 жыл бұрын
All of those advances in silicon could be achieved without creating a brand new fab. GaAs would require a completely new fab so $1B+. Also, GaAs didn't scale well to dinner plate sized wafers so you couldn't recover the cost of that fab as quickly.

@@TimothyParker1 All true, but silicon faced a many problems as GA, possibly more. I think the main difference was that SI had a proven record of making big $ so it was easy to attract big investments in new fabs and R&D, so its problems got solved. If GA had as much investment as SI, I think that there is a good chance that its problems would have been solved and it would have outperformed. Sometimes the first gets such a big head start that the better is never able to catch up. I think it is going to be the same thing with battery tech for a lot longer than most people think
