It is good to tear the brands down, and this one adds to the collection of the biggest brand-like name Joe X has been building up data to tear down: 1095. The obsolete steel with name recognition of every cost cutting over product quality american knife maker's dreams. Sure, any carbon steel kept soft enough will be fairly tough. That is what ESEE knives are a prominent example of. And also many a poor quality heat treat will disproportionately reduce toughness relative to the hardness achieved. That is what ...well, a majority of american knives made of 1095 are all prominent examples of. That doesn't change that the material has a mediocre at best toughness compared to various potential peer materials. Give it a good heat treat and keep it to 54rc to make it tough? Sure, that works for ESEE I guess. But then test a knife of the same geometry with a good heat treat at 54rc made of 5160, or go for 52100 for some extra edge performance while still being a good deal tougher, or even go ahead and go stainless with 420hc or 14c28n and still be tougher than 1095. (Edit: Hell, even everyone around here's favorite-but-shouldn't-be Aus8 is also tougher than 1095 if heat treated equally) Unless they start showing up a lot cheaper to correspond to the material cost and value, it is just a bad deal to go with 1095. But instead it has name recognition and ironically runs a bit premium.

Joe X does it again. Thanks for all your hard work and continued videos. I rejoice in the knowledge that Tops ‘Fan Boys’ are brought to tears over your videos. Also, always look forward to reading the comments from toolbag people who find it necessary to point out that these ‘tests’ are not a realistic reflection of how a knife will perform on wood. Well, DUH, no shit! There are literally hundreds of knife channels out there that show how a knife performs on wood. This definitely isn’t one of those channels. This is a channel dedicated to showing maximum abuse over a very short period of time. YES, the average knife owner will never subject their knives to this kind of abuse, but being that all knives ‘tested’ by Joe X are subjected to roughly the same tests, it is absolutely awesome seeing which knives hold up and more importantly, which knives don’t. Keep up the great work Joe X.

Damn my guess earlier was pretty much exactly right hahahaha 😂 as soon as i saw that thick spine i knew it would break on spine hits. 1095 is strong but its all about heat treat. Esee is best on their heat treat of 1095 and tops is second but any 1095 that thick will generally snap in half. Seems like tops hardened this a bit too much for how thick it is. They need to experiment with either laminated steel or differentially heat treating 1095 to make the edge hard but keep the spine softer... then you'll see insanely impressive strength from 1095. I still think when its done right 1095 is one of the best budget steels. Awesome video as alway JoeX! The butthurt will be massive on this one hahahaha 😂

@@knifelover755 properly heat treated 1095 is very tough. The reason it gets hated on is that it's cheap and crappy manufacturers use it a lot and don't bother to heat treat it right. 1095 isn't the best steel obviously but it is good steel when done right.

Personally I don't mind when the steel is harder and breaks on abuse, as long as it gives me better edge retention. But that break looked too rough for that type of steel. Maybe it was overheated before quenching. What a waste of nice steel. Also the price seems stupid for that type of knife. Thanks for testing.

I like the look of this design, only those saw teeth (???, wtf ???) bother me. After the first minutes of the vid i got concerned, for a moment it seemed the knife might hold up well. Pretty satisfied with the end result, though. Saves me some cash... 😇
