Thanks for the lyrics. All this time I thought the opening line was "You gotta do the dance and it goes like this." Actually it's "They got a new dance and it goes like this." Happy 84th birthday to Joey Dee, and many more! Posting 6-11-24.

People dont know how huge this song was back in the early 60's. It put the ''Peppermint Lounge’’ on 45th Street in NYC on the map and started an enormous dance craze for that time. Everyone wanted to go there and do this "dance"..... Huge for that time and the Twist era! A true classic from 1962 America! ("The Peppermint Twist" on the "ROULETTE" record label) These were the John F. Kennedy years. I met Joey Dee years ago and he was kind and patient and answered all my questions about "Rock an' Roll" and the music of that time. He was and is a true professional not to mention he helped to launch the careers of The Ronettes, Jimmy Hendrix, The Rascals to name a few. Thank you for the music & the wonderful " Peppermint Twist " memories Joey Dee & The Starliters.....

@@lesleymoniquemartinez1536 Yes, 1961-62 different time and place in America and the world! Long time ago! Highly doubt todays generation would know or be aware of the great songs of the past, maybe some?? Then again, everything does change........

@@Twinklez63 It depends on what generation your talking about! Many of todays generation are not aware! Perhaps a few do know of these songs but aren't truly aware of the significance these songs hold or held at that time........

I think it's cool how "connected" this band is with other musicians. Dave Brigati is the older brother of Eddie Brigati from the Young Rascals. Not only that but Eddie, Gene Cornish and Felix Cavalieri (all Rascals) played with the Starlighters as did Jimi Hendrix. Back then he was known as Jimmy James. Charles Neville (Neville Brothers) and even Joe Pesci (yes, THAT Joe Pesci) played guitar with them.

I remember when this single came out back in 1961He was really big in the NY metro area for a while and second only to Chubby Checker in the Twist mania (with all due apologies to Hank Ballard & the Midnighters ) This was about my favorite back then at age 11 until something new came along.

Some reliable music resources state that both actor Joe Pesci ("Goodfellas") and Jimi Hendrix (some unknown lead guitarist) were both members of Joey Dee's Starliters at one point. The NJ band was quite hot in the early 60's and even Frankie Valli's brother was involved. Worth searching out for yourself -- don't want to spoil the surprise.
