People throw that word legend around far to freely in my opinion. Every half decent footballer or singer is being called a legend now-a-days but for me a legend isn't just somebody who is at the top of his or her profession. For me they need to have that all round package and i think most people reading this would agree that Joey had that in spades. His modesty, his humility and his charity are just some of the traits in my book that made him the absolute LEGEND that he was and still is. There are very few people in this world that when every time i see their picture it brings a big smile and a happy warm feeling over me. Being a Irishman it makes me very proud to know he was one of our own, but we all know he was truly loved the world over. May he and his brother Robert and nephew William all rest in peace. It's a brutal sacrifice for one family to have to endure. I don't know if knowing they died doing something they truly loved makes it any easier for their loved ones to cope but i really hope it helps them.

Legend is everything that is posthumously remembered. And so is Joey.
@BilobateDripАй бұрын
People do that in football and basketball because its main fan base is basic minded people who put way too much hype on everything now. In the racing world, we are gentlemen. There is respect, humility, and honor in our little 200 mph world. The average racer has a respect for life that most people never know

Just like our hometown hero Jarno Saarinen, Joey also worked on his bikes. I followed Joey since I was a kid in the late 1970s. Joey, Robert, William: you will never be forgotten, rather always remembered with warmth and affection. Thank you for all the wonderful memories. Lots of love from Finland also to the Dunlop family and their friends.

As Michael Rutter said, Joey is still with us, just glad that I witnessed the yellow helmet flashing through the hedges, no other rider in history has gained the respect and love from fans, and the public who have no interest in sport, Joey is someone we should all look up to an amazing human being.

Joey was unique. He went to the very top of his sport but remained the same shy guy he had always been. Every year he took a van load of food and supplies to Romanian orphans. One of their carers took a photo of him eating corned beef and beans with the poor kids. He didn't even ask for his charity efforts to be publicised. The man was a true legend.

Not sure most people have any idea what these lads do on that TT Circuit among others. Going really fast is one thing, but when there are hundreds of changes in the dynamics of the pavement at 180 plus mph it's just a different world for lack of better words to describe the ride. They are getting slammed around and it must be sheer terror when the bike bottoms out and comes back up off the road and there is basically no control for a second or three. I want to go there so bad. One day. Have to take my bike though. Big dream. Joey was so fearless. It's amazing. And such a cool cat also. Everyone tells of what a gentleman he was. That says it all. RIP JD.

Reading the book about Robert Dunlop at the moment, Full Throttle, great read. Realized today marks 20 years to the day since Joey tragically crashed and died. Growing up in his area he was akin to Pele or Ali in terms of greatness. An all-time legend from a legendary racing family. RIP Joey, you showed the world how to race.

I remember reading the letters about Joey in Motorcycle Weekly for a year after he died. Just stories from ordinary people about him having a chat over a coffee in some motorway stop. A bit of advice offered, working on a bike overnight a casual nod of recognition in a paddock. Everything superstars would never do but legends will.

What makes Joey the absolute in my opinion 100% the best Rider ever to hit the tarmac in Ireland Britain and the world I don't even care if he's not raced in US he's the absolute best he is not just because of his riding ability although that would be enough but it's also because of his heart of gold. I don't know that you would ever talk to anyone that's ever crossed his path or had a conversation with them that wouldn't tell you the absolute same what a wonderful human being Joey Dunlop was he just happened to be a motorcycle road racer. May you rest in peace and thank you so much for being such an incredible example to me and the rest of the world will truly be missed.
