This is amazing! They got the characteristics of a horse down to a point! Ears, breathing, tail twitches, foot work and all! Unbelievable work. :)

The ear swiveling is the most real and out of habit I watch Joey's ears. The people make Joey so real I tend to forget they're there. From a distance Joey acts like a real horse. Absolutely incredible!

I saw this play a while back. The puppets are so amazing it actually looks like it is draging the puppeteers along, not the other way around. In my humble opinion the hindlegs are the weak point of Joey. I have lived with horses all my life, and the movement and anatomy of Joey's butt is just a bit off to me. But the frontlegs, chest, neck, and head makes up for that flaw. They are so realistic it hurts. Well done everyone that worked on Joey and his actors. He is amazing!! As for the complaints about the actors being visible, thats the point. Especially the head actor. They show Joey's personality in the clothing. If you seen the show you would know that the other major horse puppet has a completely different outfit for its actors. They are dressed in military uniforms. It is to show that Joey is a simpel farmer horse dragged into war, while Major is a horse trained for battle. They act and move differently as well, with Joey being both smaller and more relaxed and Major being big, strict, and bossy. It is genius tbh

The puppetry came first. Someone from The National Theatre saw the puppeteers in a different production and was keen to work with them. They then looked for a story that could be told with this sort of puppetry and settled on adapting Warhorse.

The point is that you see the puppeteers in War House, there are multiple puppets in the play and not at all are animals. I saw the Toronto production a number of times and sometimes I watched the puppeteers and sometimes the puppets.

There are very tiny things that are a bit unrealistic, i spend 80% of my time around horses, but I have Baroque Friesians and then about 14 other horses, the friesians have very extended and high leg movement and very elegant smooth movement, so maybe im just used to their movement compared to quarter horses,thoroughbreds the usual, ,I'd also say the lope, canter and gallop movement is probably the hardest thing to replicate, with some horses like quarter horses having naturally low heads and minimal movement and friesians having naturally high heads and extended movement and they balance more with their heads as pendulums, I'd also say horse crossover their legs, if it was like joey, he is probably a highly trained horse and would know how use the front and hind quarters independently, but overall its super realistic
@zacmumblethunder7466
@zacmumblethunder7466 2 жыл бұрын
In the play, Joey's not highly trained. He's bought as a farm horse even though the farmer is warned that his mixed parentage will make him unsuitable. He's part thoroughbred and part shire horse. The only thing he gets trained for is to take the collar and respond to Albert's owl-call signal.

They have to fit two fully grown men inside the puppet, they couldn't get the measurements exactly correct. If they had attempted to build a horse to absolute scale, the guys would have been way too cramped.

The reason the puppeteers are in that colour is to represent where Joey came from and his background because he came from a farm As for Topthorns puppeteers they are in black to represent that he has been in the cavalry

This horse would look sooooo much more realistic if they added faux (fake) fur onto it's whole body. And it would be nice and professional if the puppet people wear all black so they blend in so they wouldn't stick out and be quickly noticed by the audience.. Doing so will also make the horse look more alive/realistic. But, overall they did a good job on the horse puppet, the sounds, etc...The handler and his costume is fine, it keeps the act of the character going and it show what time period he came from :)..

Angie Darst Faux fur would make the whole thing look incredibly tacky and out of place. The entire play has a very specific feel to it. They made a puppet that functions as a horse, and they didn't try to make it look too "real." Besides, fake fur would compromise the puppeteers' ability to see. The mesh is to allow the inside puppeteers to see out. Honestly if the people are the first thing you notice, you're not appreciating the performance.

cause I'm a dressage rider, they don't look very real, the horses back leg must come into the same spot the front legs where when they were on the ground, so...., the front leg leaves a hoof print on the ground, the back leg has to go into that print the front leg left

If they tried to make it look real it wouldn't be a pink wire frame. Of course it won't move exactly like a real horse, but for a puppet it is pretty remarkable.

G'day Fat Pat, I'm a former Equestrian Federation of Australia Dressage Judge, Level 3 Instructor & competitive rider at advanced level; in dressage, we aim for perfection of horse movement, balance and dexterity without disturbance by the Rider and it is achieved by an evolution of training, harmony, ability and determination over years. You are classifying this puppet horse as an advanced performer to display only a portion of dressage rules??? Personally, I applaud their capacity to deliver such a true embodiment of a moving horse and of course it is not "perfect" but such a close impersonation! Kay Wawn
