Synopsis:
When the management of the Theater an der Wien announced the appearance of the first operetta by the waltz king Johann Strauss on their stage, the audience's expectations were high. But when this work premiered on February 10, 1871 under the title "Indigo and the 40 Robbers", the opinions of viewers and critics were divided: the painstakingly patched plot was generally criticized, but the music by Johann Strauss unleashed storms of enthusiasm out of. This contrast led, for example, in the review of February 12, 1871 in the "Neue Freie Presse" to Eduard Hanslick raising the accusation: A man of the name and talent of Johann Strauss should never have stooped to writing the music for to compose this libretto, poor in plot, insultingly flat and mean in dialogue. Among other things, Hanslick wrote about the music: Graceful melodies and inspired rhythms must be praised after the work. The critic Ludwig Speidel said in the "Fremden-Blatt" of February 12, 1871, among other things: How lightly hopping, how gracefully chatting, how irresistibly coquettish are his poles. The ballet is rich in piquant passages. Speidel's judgment excellently characterizes the quick polka, which was published by Spina on May 28, 1871, based on motifs from the operetta "Indigo and the 40 Robbers" under the title "Die Bajadere". The first part of this work consists of the rapid conclusion of the ballet music, the other motifs come from the 2nd and 3rd act of the operetta (No. 12 and No. 17, or No. 18). In addition, Johann Strauss provided a particularly attractive coda for the Schnellpolka, which almost compels the applause of the audience. The first performance of the "Bajadere" took place at a celebratory concert of the Strauss Orchestra conducted by Eduard in the Viennese k.k. Volksgarten on June 16, 1871, together with other dance styles based on motifs from the operetta "Indigo", but also with the overture to Richard Wagner's opera "Rienzi" and a scene from Giacomo Meyerbeer's successful work "The Huguenots."
