In the video it states that the exchange rate was R2 to the British Pound. 16 years later by 1976 the Rand has strengthened to approx R1.47 or so to the British pound. Although there were some sanctions by that time the Rand did start to fall but actually kept its value well considering increased sanctions. The fact that it kept on falling after the ANC took over just confirms that the ANC is doing probably more damage to the SA economy than the international sanctions did.

I clearly remember the brown Bakelite tubes money had to be sent up to the main cashier in; the springbok arch; Hennes & Mauritz; Belfast; wooden escalators (Macey in Manhattan still has them); those horrible displays and mannequins; and cashiers in the bigger chemists and supermarkets shouting out what you just bought-see target lady in Saturday night live; men would take your photo and send it to you, i still have one of mine; and a guy would open his jacket and show a choice of watches pinned in. also the London fish and chip shop Bree street (Portuguese), very high quality. people had a laugh, a sense of fun, the opposite of modern London. window shopping was big. xmas decorations down every street. you felt 'jo'burg like a sensation.

Thankfully evertything is much, much better nowadays... much less crime and corruption, everything better organized

The prices! I remember when an airticket from Jhb to Durban and a week in a 2 star hotel cost R99. Or for that matter an round trip airticket from Jhb to NYC to Miami and then London cost R850.

Everything about the countries history makes sense when you look the capital. Literally was located far from the hinterlands, and shielded from danger by the mountains. But beyond those mountains was pretty bleak.
