Saw a trailer for it, over the shoulder of a friend, and that's how I learned of it. I'm a history nerd and yet I heard about this because a friend who loves trashy romance novels/sweeping romantic drama films, told me I needed to see this trailer. I was expecting some GONE WITH THE WIND rip-off or maybe a wanna-be FAR FROM THE MADDENING CROWD and instead, found this gem. No one had copies and the theatrical release was long past. Finally, I found a copy at the local university's library (I jokingly call them my Blockbuster, cause I borrow as many movies/TV shows as I do books). Beautiful movie. Shame it didn't get more attention and isn't more widely known. Granted, I've a long list of movies I could say the same about (many of them historical fiction, biographical dramas, or little known SciFi flicks).

So much emotion in this scene alone. This movie is sorely underrated. I have seen it several times since I watched it in my local theatre and have loved it more and more each and every time. The storyline, the acting, the MESSAGE. The romance wasn't even the main part of it but it was woven so amazingly into it that it didn't distract the least from the actual plot and, in fact, enhanced the story. I highly recommend it to everyone. I cry every time during the unveiling of the painting of the two girls. This movie has a powerful message.

The guy actually turned red saying he loved her, the emotion and truth in his words. I love how when he talks about sth he is passionate about, you can hear his heart in his voice and tone and he even acted with his eyes. This confession was simply beautiful. He could have stopped at the first 'i love her' but that wouldn't really be him, he needed to show the depth of his love and it was simply beautiful. Re watched the movie again, and every single time I am amazed at this scene. And Lord Mansfield reaction was very apt, like he left everyone speechless, including me of course 😁😁. Oh and I loved how he respected her and Everytime he took off his hat while talking to her or trying to drive home q point, I loved it. It was his little ways of trying to convey his respect and love that made the confession all so beautiful.

This man wasn’t her dad it’s her uncle. He raised her while her father was at war at the Kings beckoning. Kind of shitty for him to throw that in her face 😥
@veritas88n43 жыл бұрын
Basically her father figure. That's also what he was saying, really.
@khalicamoore95122 жыл бұрын
@@SugarCookiePlaysAdoptMe I know he's her uncle and his is not throwing the death of her father in her face. What he is trying to say from that line is, her biological dad would never act like this because her biological dad never had to deal with the horrors of what would happened is she married someone being a mixed woman at this time. You have to understand her getting married was a dangerous thing. If she married a wealthy white man(equal or higher) like traditions for rich women they would use her like a slave. She would be used as a sexual exotic toy and then live like a slave in her own home . If she married a whitean under her wealth his name will drag hers down and she will be subjected to the racial social structure that she was saved from under her own name. If she married a black man of any status except slave she would be lowered strongly and be treated a low as any other free black person at the time. Literally marriage was a life altering thing and her uncle was faced with known this and dealing with it, something her biological father never had to deal with.
