John Barnes: Football fans have to admit they are racist but are too scared

Research by Sky Sports News suggests nearly nine in 10 fans have witnessed racist behaviour at football matches in the UK.
A Sky Data Poll suggests around 71% of black and ethnic minority fans suffered racist abuse at least once, and 18% say they are personally abused often or every time they attend a match.
Former England and Premier League footballer John Barnes spoke to Sky's Kay Burley and said a new approach needs to be taken to tackle abuse at football grounds.

I like John Barnes! I respect him as a player and as a man, he's a great guy and a very smart guy! What he is saying about racism in football & society in general is right! He speaks very eloquently on this cancer in society called racism. Racism against minorities, particularly against Blacks is harmful, not only to Blacks, but also harmful to society in general. Racism against minority communities can lead to exclusion, then it can lead to social instability at a local level then spreads at a national level. That's it's very important that we must fight racism wherever & whenever it occurs. Say No To Racism! Let's Kick Racism Out Of Football!

Most of the football fans who shout racist abuse aren’t actually racist, they just say stupid things to under the players skin. The same folks shouting racial abuse at Sterling are the same folks cheering him on when he’s playing for England

The guy who shouted at Sterling swore that he shouted "Manc C**t" not "black c**t. Even so if racism is power plus privilege, is the privilege with the white guy who earns an average wage and pays £50 a pop for a seat..or the superbly gifted multi-millionaire black footballer? I believe Sterling will survive his terrible experience.

Some fans aren't afraid to be dubbed racist, some clubs and fans are just better at hiding it because it doesn't look 'good' during modern times.

I'm not a football fan but I honestly think there is a place for ex footballers in politics, I saw Gary Neville put an out of touch Edwina curry in her place the other day and was impressed, the house of commons has become more diverse over time but still has a way to go, I would love to see both Neville and Barnes as MPs.

Dear W Wolfo: One can be racist or -- "discriminatory" (the new buzzword) which the clever use to encompass almost everything. Verizon light-duty techs in New York, who sleep in the garage-office (and get overtime!), any negative mention about them is discriminatory. A black British who is working with Verizon (The CWA 1109 union in Brooklyn, New York), is scoffed, mocked, psyched and head played all day, day in and day out. This is internecine racism. It's possible, and it does happen -- even with co-workers and *union members.* They believe that he doesn't provide the office political clout for people to get *office cred and cheap popularity* of workplace elevation, so he is discarded.

Yeah, although would be handy if racial bias examples he speaks of, in shops, in the street, were explore more .... somehow getting a true picture of how widespread bias is. Is everyone unconsciously biased? Really? Everyone? Otherwise, yeah, the media don't know what to make of him, he doesn't fit their narratives, he speaks of subtleties and a perspective that is sadly new to them.

If only the spotlight were on incidents in the streets and workplaces. John Barnes aint getting much backup when he makes a lot of sense. Its a shame. If people appreciated his perspective, we might have a truer picture of real deep-seated racism, what we are up against, and dis-spelling people of nonsense, I stood in the spion kop in 1988 (I think it was), John missed a game injured, and a few Liverpool fans gave a few Spurs lads some racist crap at corners, a few, one fella shouted 'Its alright, Barnesy aint playin'. Not many joined in. Was I the only silent head-shaker? anyway, in this anecdotal experience, some racist bias re-emerged, yet not to the degree of previous times. Maybe few people joined-in as they no longer wanted to? Maybe. What's the reality of how many people are real racists like this? John is right that banning anything potentially offensive might just send it underground. What's the reality of how many people are predudiced to, say, worry when a black man is in a shop? Its not everyone. Its not nobody. Yes, I agree, banning everything in sight that is potentially offensive may just throw a veil over deep-held nonsense. Yet, given this murky situation, despite it, is the proportion of racially-biased people declining, or the intensity of their bias declining. Has the 'british empire' paradigm mentality declined? I still see and hear it but, it seems, seems, less, generally. I could be wrong, overly optimistic, maybe. If people focus on screen-behaviour rather than physical behaviour, we aint gonna get a good picture of change or non-change. If only the spotlight were on incidents in the streets and workplaces. We might at least know what's going on. ?

*** the definition. Definitions are under corporate control. Its people's nasty reactions to people of other races, subtle or blatant? Something like that. Instant dislike, fear, that kinda thing. The corporate agenda wants to confuse people, changing the definition, adding arguments and confusion to perpetuate problems. They focus on what they are told to. Barnes would have them focus on everyday people's lives, bias in shops, in the streets, in workplaces, .... Not saying he's totally and absolutely right, but they wouldnt go near his suggestion, its not in their script.

Any one can be racist Muslim, Christian, Hindu, white, black Doesn't mean we gonna generalise everyone with "Racist" tag. And last month I have seen a lot African being racist and bigot toward Indians but I'm not here calling all of them racist.
