Wow, I'm in conflict about what I want for this country and for this man. A part of me wishes that this man was our prime minister as he genuinely sounds like a good human being first and foremost with integrity abounds. But the other part of me doesn't want him to to be our prime minister for his sanity. I don't want his good character that I perceive he has to be tainted by the slime, lies, scandal that comes from being in that world. But yes, selfishly we need more men like him in power.

John Bercow for Labour Leader. Charismatic, funny, years of valid experience, integrity, a vision for Labour and a vehement desire to see the tories expelled, with the ability to rip the Tory rabble to shreds verbally. 👍 I hope to see the man make the history books as the guy that put things right. Your Country needs You John. 👍

Lost me at "... and I'm a big fan of my colleagues" even more so with his stance on Tony Blair and Iraq. He was happy with his vote for war even though subsequently that war killed more people than Saddam ever could and continues to this day killing civilians through depleted uranium and other toxic weapons. If he had to feel guilty about something it should be this, not youthful racism. I find it all too easy imagining him starting a war with Russia if he were in charge. As he says himself, eloquence per se doesn't make what is said correct ... and eloquent he is. What use a Labour government if their vision is Blairite?

@@sianscountrylife4925 He was quintessentially sacked. It was declared that the Tories would field another candidate in his seat and knowing he would lose he resigned. This too was why he was only too happy to help prevent the Tory party getting their general election, even if that meant depriving the country a chance to demonstrate that which was already so obvious in the polls, that the country had had its fill of parliament being handcuffed, the supreme court making unprecedented interventions and remainer mps machinating with motions designed to interrupt and disrupt brexit. He could have proved his principals popular by standing independently but he brushed such notions under the carpet and instead pretended the time was right and that it was his choice and now here you are mistaken in your belief that he retained a democratic mandate.

While I am definitely a fair bit to the left of Bercow's current political position, I none the less like him, I am specifically talking about his time as Speaker, I was not aware of him when he held positions that he now feels are wrong, but that he is honest about his past is a credit to him and something more politicians should embrace. As Speaker he stood for what he believed was right and fair, he did indeed do an awful lot to reform parliament and make it more open and diverse, he also made parliament more accessible to everyone and in particular he made politics and parliament something young people can get exposure to, learn about and perhaps even get more excited about than is traditionally the case. I think he deserves to be a Lord for that progress alone! Not to mention that it is something all of his predecessors have been honoured with and to exclude him alone is frankly discriminatory, whether it be due to political, retaliatory or bigoted reasons doesn't really matter, what matters is that it is discrimination. I think we have all seen Bercow under fire and in very stressful situations and he has never lost his temper, he sometimes quips back a witty riposte at people but it is always an amusing repartee, I have even seen him upset and hurt but even then he doesn't lash out, at worst you could say he has been exasperated or frustrated at times but he has _never_ come across as aggressive or intimidating and certainly not acted as a bully. To be honest, it sounds like these people have either been pressured/persuaded to speak out in *ordah* to tarnish his reputation and to validate them not making him a Lord or they are very insecure people who get upset and defensive if someone doesn't praise them and agree with them in which case they have no business being in politics where there are always at least two sides to most issues and someone is likely to disagree with you at some point. While, of course they need to investigate if such allegations have been _officially_ made, this should be done quickly and efficiently and if as I suspect his name is cleared, they have no excuse for excluding him from his rightful position in the House of Lords, which he has more than earned! I would go so far as to say he probably deserves it more than many who are currently sitting in the Other Place!

Even his own staff thought so. It was also disgraceful he mentioned them by name negatively in his book without informing them or Westminster. Shocking. He was biased and he has now quite rightly been consigned to the dustbin of political history. How you find this person fair is beyond me. This is a wonderful story of a vast political journey, from a young would-be conservative associated with far-right movements (which he admits to and calls his younger self out - most people would be trying to hide that for their careers' sake), to a relatively moderate conservative MP, to a progressive liberal idealist who champions the rights of various minority groups and has given them more representation in Parliament than ever before. I don't have any loyalties to one party or another, as a foreign viewer to UK affairs, but I can respect a good, honest politician. There's more out there in the world than people think: most just rarely tend to make major headlines. Comments here are obviously divided on Bercow and Brexit. I'm not about to get into an argument on all that; I'm only here to state my paltry view and leave in peace. I respect John Bercow and admire him and the work he did during his time in office greatly. There is no basis of proof of the current allegations against him, which seem like the same sort of political slander levied against him by rivals over the course of his entire career, and so I don't regard them. I believe in focusing on what he has done and continues to do, which is to bring awareness to Parliamentary reform and further diversity efforts.

That might be accurate (short term), but long term we will indeed learn, and do better. Plus there are external variables that will impact all of this, for example the looming tsunami of smart automation that is projected to generate massive unemployment (50% ?), by mid-century or even sooner, in every developed economy, which will in turn require implementation of Universal Basic Income (for purposes of national survival), which will in turn generate a more reasoned approach to all of the above. In other words, today's GOP, in the U.S., is on the wrong side of history, and is looking at its own demise within the next 5-10 years, although meanwhile it will indeed be able to generate quite a lot of regrettable mischief.

Island countries with the ability to effectively control immigration will prosper greatly, compared to continental countries. Hence Britain are doing the right thing leaving FOM. The reason why things were so divided in September was because YOU Bercow took a side against the will of the people due to your own personal views on Brexit. Had you just let Brexit go through like the referendum and the House had BOTH voted on, then the country would not have been divided. You are soooo wrong Bercow. You are saying that the 2017 election was more important than the 2016 referendum or the House vote in 2016. In the end the country proved you wrong by giving the Conservative Party a majority in 2019. Bercow, you were so on the side on Remain. You are such a liar.

I'm not normally a Channel 4 News fan as they are far too left leaning for my liking. However, this interview was excellent and very informative. It revealed a side of John Bercow we've not seen before and Krishnan Guru-Murthy conducted the interview well, giving Bercow space to make his points without the usual interruptions. Is this a sign that Channel 4 News is improving? Let's hope so. Great interview.
@PVflying

Kenny Shortcake perhaps it’s a sign that Ch4 News’s political position was best served by allowing Bercow to communicate his views, just as much as they are often served by suppressing and challenging the views of their other interviewees. You don’t have to watch much of ch4 news to realise it’s basically propaganda.

A politician who was Speaker and popular as Speaker, and joined both main parties, is a more neutral figure, there is less or no need concept to appease the public, so the interviewer can be more respectful and good natured, seems to explain why he gets a truly decent interview, the usual concern is to appease the public.

@@ludmilaturkova1274 I'm not sure ideology *ever* played a significant role. For decades I was told that Kim Philby was ideologically committed to Marxism and the Soviet system.Trouble is it's a bit difficult to make that argument when Philby surrounded himself with the trappings of Western Capitalism throughout his life. The counter-argument usually follows, "But he was a SPY". He was faking it. And remarkably well given that he operated so successfully. The trouble with that argument is British intelligence had *every* reason to suspect Philby from the very beginning. Why? Because his father was caught red-handed pulling the same trick in Saudi Arabia. As the saying goes - "If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck ..."

My mates would get a lot of racial abuse from the Poles and we would get into loads of fights on nights out and it really benefitted my mates that a white guy would be able to talk the police down on their behalf. It showed me its better to get to know someone than pre-judge them based on their colour and culture.

I have far more respect and admiration for someone who's moved from the political right to the left. Moving left to right as one gets older and wealthier is fairly normal for someone who votes only in their own interests. As a young adult not born into wealth, generally, left wing policies are far more immediately beneficial. As one gets older and more wealthy, acquiring assets like a house, maybe a business, then right wing policies will generally serve them better. Moving from the right to the left indicates someone whos decided to support policies that help the largest number of people and the poorest. Its selfless.
