In the 1920's John and Richard Bolster built a small race car with a wooden chassis, it became one of the most successful hill climb cars of its time.

Hi. This brings back memories. When I was a lad in the fifties I bought his book "Specials" ( 0pen in front of me now) and also a book called "Building and racing my 750 specisl". Can't remember the author now. I built a quite good looking Austin 7 Special which went well but never got registered. Next car a 1930 Bugatti! Regards from Argentina!

Hi Robert, I often look through Specials by John Bolster my copy is quit tatty now. Another good book by John Bolster is Motoring is my Business, the author of Building and racing my 750 was P J Stephens it came out in about 1953. I can only dream of owning a Bugatti a type 35 would be great. Regards from a rather damp and cold UK.

I have indeed. Its one of my favourite motoring books and provides an interesting insight into what motoring, motor sport and life was like all those years ago.

Hi Jesse thanks for the comment, I know what you mean it's a car I've been fascinated by for well over forty years. If you can get hold of the book Specials by John Bolster it has lots more interesting cars of that era, it's been out of print now for a good few years but they do turn up on ebay from time to time.

@@Dazsvintagestuff i'll look out for it. i've collected hundreds of photos of specials over the years and have always been fascinated by them. look up a channel called Macromachines. a young guy is crafting a 30's style racer that looks like a harry miller might have built it.
