This is why he is the greatest we've seen and will see. Buddy, Keith, Neil... and more. we hear you. But this song is the exact and perfect example of how a rather mundane 4/4 slow tempo song is elevated in parts beyond belief. The swing he had, on a straight 4/4 and then the tasty bits and then a bunch of tasty at the end. A true master.

Well put. I love the drums as an instrument and always listen out for them in songs, but with Bonzo I truly *hear* them. He had an atmosphere/presence around his playing that was incredibly special , and the menacing growling here just adds the cherry on top.

As a young drummer in the 80s because of my grandfather who also played the drums I was a huge Buddy Rich fan but with my drummer friends there were two camps. It was John Bonham or Neil Peart and in my teens I was into flamboyant drumming and didn't appreciate what Bonhams really was. Of course I respected and liked him, but I didn't realize his brilliance and talent until I got older. He was and Is the Greatest drummer ever. His grooves and playing are absolutely amazing.
@ellebrook3413
@ellebrook3413 Жыл бұрын
There is so much competition built up by fans of these two although they had such different styles/genres as to almost make comparisions pointless. "Flamboyant" sums up Peart well. Definitely technically impressive and extremely accurate, but personally too many drums and not enough earthy, primitive, sexy swaggery groove which Bonham had by the bucketload.

Hysterical Ed. I laughed my ads of listening to this master drummer at work and giving Percy a run for his money....lol. Such a shame that this much talent had to leave us so soon. And to think that his technique is STILL dissected and admired by so many drummers. Neil Pratt even says his main influence was Bonzo. R.I.P. MASTER.

I had every album that Zeppelin made and sold them all for buttons so that I wouldn't get too used to them and not really appreciate how good they are. 20 years later I listen to ths "new stuff" and now need to hunt down mp3s of the 5th Album to be able to satisfy my need. A five hour nonstop stream of Zeppelin sounds is what is needed these days to get through the summer. This sort of outtake is brilliant to fill that empty space. Surely I have a guitar and keyboards somewhere, friends? Time? Anyone out there wants to sell me a Strat? Jonah, you rekindle my hope in humanity. 金

I remember in The Eagle’s documentary, Don Henley was giving the sound engineer a fit. He couldn’t hear his drums, and he wanted them turned up louder. The last drummer that engineer worked with was Bonham, and he told Henley, “Bonham just hit the drums harder”. He told him, “I’m not John Bonham”. I like Henley in some respects. He’s an adequate drummer, but he is not in the same league as Bonham. Every band I’ve ever been in, Bonham was the drummer’s favorite drummer. I’m not a drummer, but he is so powerful. He’d make any band better. He never drops the beat. He’s a true one of a kind.

I remember when I played a cheap drum back in the 90's sounded like this. Simmon Phillips uses the same tuning technique and I do too.
