It's amazing HOW THE LATE GREAT JOHN BONHAM DOES NOT miss A BEAT ON THE high HATS

Young Eddie and Alex Van Halen were in the audience at this concert (this track is from June 25 at the Forum; Led Zeppelin's greatest-ever concert, in my opinion). We know from interviews that Eddie was impacted by watching Jimmy Page on this night, but I always wonder what Alex was doing during this segment. Probably picking his jaw up off the floor like everyone else!

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Oh my God, is he ever!! Listening to those old pre-first album boots from '75 or so when they play stuff like "Walk Away" by The James Gang, I'm always blown away by how Alex is just KILLING those fills! He's another one of those rare drummers where it takes a bar or two, tops, and you know it's him playing. He has a very, very distinctive sound.

I agree, this live album is the best representation of live Zep. Wish Jimmy included all of the LA encores on this release. nearly a 4 hour show!!

As a drummer myself, with Bonham's logo tattooed on my arm, I can't believe I've never actually sat down and listened to this specific solo until today. I am completely blown away. I always thought his solo at Royal Albert Hall in 1970 was his peak. I also never thought I would hear/see a better drum solo than Buddy Rich's "white turtleneck" solo in 1970. I was wrong. This is absolutely the best drum solo I have ever heard. 20 minutes of constant assault. No let up. Over 40 years after his death and Bonzo is still wowing all of us with his talent. Incredible.

Well it took me a while to get to this one. This is so good. To see the evolution of the work since the 1970 version at Albert Hall is amazing. More risks and more facility. It shows that he didn’t land on stage a finish product, always evolving. Later on he’d have tympani’s as well, using them with the tuning pedal during the solo to add another voice.

Yeah, his drum solos are all good but the real juicy shit is in his live performances within the songs of this very same album. You have to hear Dazed and Confused from this album and Stairway to Heaven. It's just mindblowing what he does.

Wait, only 74 views? Zero comments? There's a reupload indicating the audio got blocked, but this one is available with full audio right here, at least in the UK... by the way, the thing about John Paul Jones is that he was a church organist first and foremost (he even took a break from the fractious Physical Graffiti sessions to audition for the Assistant Organist job at Winchester Cathedral), so playing basslines on the pedals was second nature to him.

Let's not forget the Master Producer, Jimmy Page, who knew the secret to recording/miking drums. Yes, Bonham could make a derby hat sound good, but Jimmy took it from there to the stars!

John Bonham was famous for saying he had no other rock n roll drummers as influence. Ginger Baker remembers him proclaiming that there were only two drummers in the "British Wave" that were worth mentioning, himself and Ginger Baker... As Baker replied "...that cheeky little bastard. 🤣 In Bonhams posthumous biography (mostly documented by his younger brother, Mick) there were some drummers mentioned. Namely jazz and rnb drummers as the late Buddy Rich. Easily confirmed by the light and subtle sounds Bonham incorporated in his heavy and structured drumming style. However it cannot be denied that ALL rock and roll musicians at the time listened to Jimi Hendrix and his drummer, Mitch Mitchell (very underrated) notably left a mark on Bonham wether he admitted it or not. The radio version of Moby Dick and some of Mitchells solos clearly depict this. Both had jazz influences and although Bono mastered the style and was more subtle, nothing can deny the fact. I'm born and bred listening to Zeppelin and I still remember the first time I heard Moby Dick. In my opinion Bono is the biggest name in Rock and Roll history when it come to the drums, no one was close at the time. I challenge you to deep dive into Mitchell though, you might be surprised 👍

hreynmission: I hope you're not talking about that book "Beast: The Rise of John Bonham and Led Zeppelin." It is LOADED with mistakes, inaccuracies, and outright lies. I reviewed it - as "Four Sticks" - on amazon. I pointed out most of the biggest falsehoods the author is spreading in that so-called book in it.

You should do a reaction to the video from 1979 of the song Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. Elizabeth Zarhoff on the Charismatic Voice recently did a reaction to it on her channel concentrating on Robert Plant's vocals and it didn't get blocked. It has some pretty good footage of Bonham on drums and she even commented on how his drums carried the momentum of the song. Multiple time signature changes in the song.

Few ROCK drummers can play a long solo and hold interest - I believe "pacing" has a hella lot to do w/ it, obviously, but the "greats" have that innate ability to carry a solo above an beyond. Bonzo, Carl Palmer, Ian Paice immediately come to mind, but for me it's always that beautiful booming sound that Bonzo brings out of his kit that does it for me. Andrew, can you tell us non drummers exactly what it is that drummers "get right" about a solo? Thanks. Peace.
