This the full length VIDEO of John Bonham's entire drum solo from Led Zeppelin's 1977 tour stop in Seattle. The solo gets really trippy at (18:22). The concert was shot on film cameras that were not set for the low light. Thanks for listening!!

When I see John Bonham, my heart aches with pain. I feel so sorry that this great musician burned out from alcohol at the peak of his fame and didn't continue his career as a magnificent drummer. Even to this day, I rarely come across drummers of his caliber. There is no doubt that Bonham made Led Zeppelin unique; his contribution to Led Zeppelin's music was immense. I'd love to see the great ones alive as long as possible.

Once in a great while, an almost superhuman person comes along who makes you wonder how in the world they do what they do. And John Bonham is definitely one of them.

Any one of Zappas drummers, Vinnie Colaiuta or Terry Bozzio could outplay Bonham. Drumming's not a competition sport, but Bonham was a brilliant, heavy solid rock n roller, integral to Led Zeppelins classic albums The Zappa guys take drumming to a much higher musical level and are technically phenomenal.
@javlohudzlin4829
@javlohudzlin4829 4 күн бұрын
@@jamiecartwright5469 Bonham is on another level of technique to be referred to as just a heavy solid rock n roller. His playing actually draws from a jazz sensibility of swing that he adapted into the songs he played, keeping it heavy but with an underlying subtlety in the performances. His jazz influence is evident in this performance with a nod to Max Roach. Comparing musicians by saying one could outplay the other is silly, especially when it's basically apples to oranges with the different contexts in which they are playing. As you stated, drumming is not a competition sport.

Listen.....you can hear Buddy Rich in this solo, Gene Krupa is in there, John is playing this solo with a sense of calm, which most drummers never have. He includes press rolls, single strokes, bass rhythm keeping the whole thing together, hi hat keeping time while John plays around. John Bonham was the most under-rated drummer of the modern rock era.
@rickjamz
@rickjamz 6 ай бұрын
Yes! John Bonham paid respect to all his influences. Most people at the concert THEN didn't know who Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa were. Jones would do his piano solo paying respect to all his classical influences. Page's bow solo did also. Check out "Mars the Bringer of War" from Gustav Hoist's "The planet's suite". Robert Plant was influenced by American blues singers as well. Led Zeppelin paved the way for rock by showcasing their past influences and in the end, THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME!

These concerts were legendary for their length. Richard Cole (Zeppelin's tour manager) once told a story of a new roadie waiting in the wings for his next duty and several other roadies asked him if wanted to go across the street for a few pints of ale. When he said he couldn't because they were in the middle of a concert, the others laughed at him and said "Don't worry, they'll still be here when we get back. Bonzo's solo alone is about two pints long."

A lot of people are unaware that Bonham used the finger control method. You need dexterity in your fingers. When you play drums, you always keep time w your HH. It should be 2nd nature to all drummers of substance. John Henry Bonham was a naturalist. He played how he felt, what he felt. He expressed himself through his playing. As the saying goes, "your instrument is an extension of the way you feel. From his single stroke rolls, to his doubles, and paradiddles, John Bonham knew the exact recipe of finesse, and power perfectly combined. Thank you for all you left us to learn, John. RIP

In spite of being fat, he .... People who are fat are very capable of being the best, sucessful, or famous at things. Why is noting someone's weight acceptable when it has nothing to do with the topic - a person playing an instrument. I am not writing this to be critical. I am writing this to raise awareness about how our society stigmatises being fat. One person changing their way of looking at this, can help. Fat is one of the worst and growing prejudices ever. It's growing because the number of fat people, in the world, is increasing. If no one says anything about this unimaginably hurtful and shaming behavior, it will never stop.

As I watch these clips that I was actually at when ever they played in NY I now realize that bonzo definitely is the greatest drummer of my time. For a while I was on the fence between him and Bill Bruford (King crimson) because they are the only ones that can roll that kicker but bonzo was just a man possessed. All day, every day!!?? When I saw them at the garden when they filmed song remains the same I was 5 rows back from the stage and his kicker was actually thumping my chest. I was literally plastered back and the 2 hits of double barrel orange sunshine made it that much more intense. So happy all of you will never forget greatness

Bonham didn't just flail away and show off, this is actually structured and more interesting than an average drum solo. There's light and shade, like all Zeppelin songs. That's what made him the greatest; having all the power and skill in the world to give little hints... yet showing restraint so you never knew what his limits were.

His last time performing this solo, this one encompasses all eras for him. Fantastic unedited solo, so many great moments in this. ESP when he turned off the snare and goes full tribal. About half way through, and the part leading up to it is just amazing.

His kicker would make you feel like someone was punching you in the chest. I was 5 rows back at msg in NY and I was blown apart. I was literally in a trance. I have seen every zep show live in NY and they would play 5 or 6 nights at the garden. Not like today. Bands play an hour and gone. They would play a 2 hour show non stop. I don't know how they found the energy and stamina to do it. Yes I know how but nevertheless, you get my point.
