John Bonham Triplets (linear R-L-K) - Daily Drum Lesson

In this drum lesson you will learn one of the great, classic rock fills. It's just "Right - Left - Kick" played as triplets. Even though John Bonham didn't invent this fill, he made it famous and it is often referred to as "Bonham Triplets".
This is a must know for any drummer, regardless of which style you play.

bonham mostly did left hand lead so: LRK, may seem a stupid detail but it makes a huge difference in sound and feel. I say mostly because bonham was all over the place with his triplets: left lead, right lead, foot lead, he could do it either way, but his "signature triplet" sound comes from a left hand lead. He had a killer left hand, very loud, very accented, very groovy, i think that is what makes his LRK-triplets so recognizable. Only my thoughts of course.

Was about to write basically the same thing as you and then I saw your comment. None the less, this was a great lesson and break down and some good excersises for folks to start with if they are new to these types of triplets. I would just tell folks to do this same lesson and excercises but start them all with left hand lead if you want to attempt to have that true Bonham feel.

Very generous and kind of a drummer. to take the time to break down these cross over triplets with foot snare and toms.gives a very clear bluebrint on what to practice. rather than wondering for hours weeks and months about how to practice.giving drummers of all levels an opportunity to learn.thank you.

I always use to play K-L-R . I',m leading in with the kick. So now its hard to learn another way. Great lesson!

dude here's a real simple variation. I love this fill by the way. start the pattern the same only use r l k then go l r k. barriers it up really cool but makes it sound like you're doing so much more. cheers

A good tip for left hand lead was to practice it as a shuffle snare-bass then add in the middle of the triplet.

Just throwing this out there but I believe the JB triplet is L-R-K almost like a right flam-kick widened into triplets. The only time he starts with the right is when it's a triplet down the toms to the kick. R-L-R-K (snare, tom, tom, kick). Source: Studied live videos, recordings, and bootlegs for 20 years.

I agree with that. Bohnam did it several ways. I have seen snare LRK….L-hi tom K R-floor tom….. then the the crossover triplet right after… then back to snare again all leading w the left.

Another orchestration for this fill is to do both the R and L on the hi-hat. That's the fill Bonham does in Good Times Bad Times and it creates this neat auditory illusion like he's doing two kicks instead of one.

The hardest part for me is the 2 kicks in row at the last note of the fill and kick on 1 from next bar. However cool lesson and I really like your talk. Since I'm not English native speaker it's very easy for me to understand you (also you don't have stupid cut-scenes with some goofy lol-content like other youtubers). Very concise, love it!

Thanks so much for your lessons (new subscriber) they are very helpful. I have been able to do the L-R-K or R-L-K (whichever lead... not sure why everyone in comments is focusing on that but anyway) my trouble has been with transitioning into and out of these. I can play them on their own but trying to integrate them and place them properly has been less than successful. Any tips to improve on that aspect? Thanks again, love your videos.

That is an old Gretsch but the same configuration as a downbeat.. The Snare is a Ludwig Supraphonic.

2 questions: 1) does it end up being a problem if I do k r l instead? I find it easier to have the kick drum on the downbeats 2) when I do start it with my hands (eg rlk or lrk) does the kick do a quick to strikes at the end to end with the crash of the next measure's downbeat? Thanks

Hi Adam, 1. it really doesn't matter if you start with the kick or with a hand. I use both, depending on the situation. 2. When I end on the Kick I do have to play a double stroke to get the downbeat of the next measure.
