nails it, we think the eyes tell us so much about ones soul but ultimately they tell us f- all, and it's just what we wanted to believe. unless the eyes look vacant of anything good and flat almost evil trust it and run!

Yeah... such lovely sentiments being expressed so petulantly. Makes one's skin crawl a bit, doesn't it? At the same time, I wish there were some 70's clips when he was really getting out of control. Plus, Chris Spedding was in his band then.

Thank you connected365. Was this really in '86? What was the South Bank Show and is there any more to see? An intimate and mesmerising look at Mr. Cale as he seethes out this beautiful song.

I can´t hardly say this, that´s just between them. Who the hell knows what happened. They were both just very strong contollers, and both very ambicious, jealous and angry to each other, they were big, real big friends in the first years, but Lou fell in love with him and John told him he is not interested, Lou was pretty angry. It was hard for John so it´s just little bit hard to forget all this.

Yep, JC wasn't too healthy that year. Who was? It was vodka and, um, coke, in the main, I think, and his hair went grey. Und so weiter. He's been better since. And it is a sublime version of a song about the past. Even now, though, that look is scary. It's the old irony of art and illness, soul to poison soul. In its way this song is Loyalty's last anthem. Bloody Welsh wizard.

john cale has always been a bit eccentric and complex.

A great upload - thanks. What year was it made - early/mid 1980s?

That´s a perfetly true... I think Reed is little unfair anyway. I think Lou hate the competition he felt in John, both of them want always be "The First one" (but it´s very hard when they are just very, very different) and Lou can´t stand it. And as I wrote, he want John to be his lover, but John wasn´t interested. Hmmm, and I think they takes themselves little too seriously... They can´t just let it go and still have to hate each other. But who knows where the problem is...?

What an as****e. Nice to see Lou Reed wasn't the only one in that band. :-D RStrathfield: Alcohol, too. That's where the weight comes from.

That´s true!!! I don´t know why the end of their relationship was so much painful for John than for Lou. But John was the kicked, maybe he was angry and sad because of it. But does Lou feel something besides poetry? He seems like a box of ice to me. And John taking it very personally - but who really know where the real problem is and what happened between them...?! And John was very unhappy in his marriages, he is just pretty unlucky:-) Just read What´s Welch for Zen - autobiography of JC!

He looks pretty healthy to me (a bit bonkers perhaps but thats what is so great about him I think.)..Check out Heartbreak Hotel with Andy Summers on guitar elsewhere on here.now thats a bit disconcerting. It must be from the days when he would do stuff in his shows like scream at a plant till it withered and died and slaughtered a chicken...inspiring or what?

As a psychiatrist also, and a Nobel Prize winning Critical Theorist, and an ex-president of a great country, and a bloke gone off his meds, I can easily see that this man is older than when he was younger and--how do we say it?--interesting as opposed to dull and dumb as a door hinge.

This is a great performance of the song, but slightly uncomfortable viewing just due to Cale's state. Damn gifted, even if he must have thought he was performing for Jesus while being beaten by angry dwarves...

He certainly looks 'chunky'; maybe he was working out or maybe the effects of some prescribed medication...
