The entire album is an absolute masterpiece. Spiritual, cerebral, and emotional all wrapped together. Just amazing. I saw McCoy Tyner up in NYC at the Iridium years ago (Kareem Abdul Jabbar was in attendance!). He played some excerpts from this album. When I walked out onto the street after the show I experienced the vibe that Sifa described - the music was like a sound track for the city. Y'all SAD patreons done good! 👍Excellent pick and great review.

Superb!. When you consider this was done in 1964 in one take (the whole album) it's doubly superb. Coltrane kills it. I hear some of the patrons on here talking about some hairy guy who came much later than this as being an innovator. Maybe so but we shouldn't forget Coltrane. It still sounds good today and is at least as big a influence on the guys I like as anyone. I kick myself at times because I tend to forget about gems like this then when we get a request like this, I get annoyed that I neglected such great music. The polls get it right occasionally and this is one of them. Great reaction. I really enjoyed this.

I have a bit of Coltrane and am a fan for sure. I just got this on CD recently and enjoyed it, but noticed that the sax is much higher in the mix than the other instruments. I did not notice as much listening to it now with the headphones. My wife and I recently watched a documentary on John Coltrane and it was great. He is a GIANT in music and influenced so many.

This era of Coltrane was the music that opened up some jazz music - at least the modal stuff, to a lot of Rock musicians. Coltrane and Miles Davis both in the 1960s with their newer form of Jazz that wasn't so complex in terms of chord change and melody. And I just love Elvin Jones, one of my all time favourite drummers.

The John Coltrane Quartet. Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on Bass. When people play this good together, it's magical.

As an extra bit, I think it is a tribute to how great he was that 2 later giants, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana did the album Love Devotion Surrender together in 1973, which included 2 of Coltrane's tracks, as homage to the great man

also Stanley Clarke did ,,''song to John'' ,,pts 1 and 2 on his album ,,''Journey to love,'',...as a tribute to Coltrane....Acoustic piece with Chick Corea and John McLaughlin which I expect you have heard since you have heard Love ..devotion and surrender...The Santana/McLaughllin album...They actually play a version of this song if memory serves me right.

The bass at the end was the way of transitioning into Part 2 "Resolution", which has some good soloing by pianist McCoy Tyner on it.

Nice! Recorded 6 months after Eric Dolphy (he of Frank Zappa's Memorial Barbecue ) died. This is pretty much perfection here but all the same would have been interesting to hear him accompany this Classic Quartet. Heard Sifa mention Wu-Tang whom I listened to yesterday (it's got Thelonious Monk!).

"A Love Supreme" is a four-part suite that clocks in at a little over 32 minutes. This is part 1, "Acknowledgement", and it is from the LP, rather than live as the clip implies (although the visual of Trane playing sax through Garrison's bass solo at the end is a bit of a giveaway). The vocals are by Coltrane overdubbing himself.

probably the best jazz album of all time, the only way to really listen to this music is to let go and be in the midst of it, like all spiritual music, immersion

I have to say - I wonder if this album has had its impact blunted by a combination of over-exposure/over-hype. I "grew up with" the more ferocious Antibes live version of the suite and thus have always regarded this either second-best or third-best (based on what we have of the unfinished "Shepp version").

No, no ,no ,no ! You did it all wrong for this album. Pursuance (part iii) is the climax and part iv is the release. It is a savage unleashing of emotions and it's a crime to even listen to it without getting to 'pursuance'. Try again. Those who commented on giving yourself a favor by listening to it all...Well, do that. It builds to pursuance an when you think it can't build anymore it does until it has you reeling.
