This channel is about Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Grunge, and Blues. The one is not part of any of those genres but my interest is peaked. I’ve heard of John Coltrane but I don’t think I’ve heard any of his music.

Great reaction. Thank you. Coltrane is playing a soprano saxophone. I think this album may be the first time he recorded with one. His influence can be heard in Jerry Garcia’s approach to guitar. Coltrane legacy goes beyond genre and instrument. He was so ahead of his time many jazz players haven’t caught up even these many decades later. I’m glad you doing this one and like The Dead his best work is live, every performance was unique. His band line ups were a collection of the best musicians of his day and all ahead of their time as well. I wouldn’t expect too many views since this is a bit left field of what you usually react too but there aren’t too many jazz reaction vids as compared to other musics so you’ll corner the market and it’s a guaranteed like and view from me. Thanks again.

Thanks Craig! You can thank the Coltrane quartet for the Grateful Dead! Trane being on of Jerry’s biggest influences and McCoy Tyner being Bobby’s number 1!

Though John Coltrane IS considered a Jazz musician, he set the stage for many Rock and Rollers with his improvisational style, and his riffs. Not surprisingly, this song sends me in my mind right to Ms.Julie Andrews as Maria in everybody's favorite musical, The Sound Of Music. I'm climbing in The Alps right now. Aaahhh. Thanks Jonah.

Soprano Saxophone (straight shape like a clarinet but made of brass) requires an INCREDIBLE control from the player. This might legitimately be my favorite record of all time. And live they take it out even further.

You've done a lot of Dead reactions. Rhythm guitarist Bob Weir has said that he modeled his work in the Dead (in part) on how McCoy Tyner's keyboard complemented Coltrane. The improvisational direction that Coltrane and others like Ornette Coleman took jazz was obviously a big influence on many in the '60s rock scene, but especially the Dead. You might want to consider a reaction to Miles Davis's Bitches Brew sometime soon.

Yup, he said he was McCoy’s left hand and Jerry was the right hand.

This style also killed jazz from the mainstream. People didn't want to hear dissonant noodling and turned to rock n roll instead. As Duke Ellington once said, "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing."

I do actually own two John Coltrane albums. If I'm in the right mood then I can really relax and enjoy the music. Nice one! 😁 Cheers from England. 😊😎🎸🇺🇦🇬🇧

John is playing a straight soprano saxophone here. I enjoyed your reaction and I am glad you enjoyed this legendary performance by the whole team. You didn't mention the drummer Elvin Jones but I am sure you know he is also a big part of what makes this recording great.

Not quite. It's actually Modal Jazz, although Modal Jazz isn't an actual Jazz Style. Bebop has a lot more chord changes than Modal Jazz. Modal Jazz as the name implies focuses on improvisation over scales, so there aren't much chord changes.

Soprano saxophone as opposed to a tenor saxophone. Check videos of branford marsalis playing sax with the grateful dead or some with Clarence Clemons from the EStreet band playing with the dead!
