The first video on the JD 2040, left out in the rain for years, missing stick covers become a bigger problem then expected.

Was looking forward to watching you rebuild the 2040. I have one as well. It is a 1979 model. I am 58 and bought it in June if the year I graduated High School. Love that old Iron Horse. I used and abused mine for years cutting REALLY heavy brush and using the PTO to operate a water pump in my gravel pit. Love that old tractor. Bought a new JD 5055D with a loader in 2009. Main thing I learned from that? I have been very successful in life, I’m gonna send my 2040 back to the dealer and get them to rebuild the engine, clutch, brakes and replace the PTO out put shaft and seals. Obviously all fluids rubber and belts. Then I will add a ROPS and a loader. Get all that done... new tires and paint. $$$ ??? Hmmmm... Peeps say I can buy one cheaper. That may well be the case, but I already did that... a brand new one... with 13 more HP, a loader and two sets of wheel weights each side and it definitely aint as good of a tractor as my old Iron Horse!! It just needs a little love and some $$$. Betting it will last another 42 years. The only things I have ever did was hoses, rubber, batteries, fluids, filters and fuel? Rebuilt the hydraulic pump, starter (a few times) and replaced the clutch about 20 years ago. Does anybody know the model of an 75-85 HP JD 4x4 from this era? Thinking a cab and loader.

How’s it going with the restoration? 3 years can be short or long depending on a person’s plate! I just got a ‘76 edition of this model, thanks to my stepdad for getting her running, I’m needing to replace the tachometer to start tracking hours for maintenance…lol. I’ll take video of future work on her, maybe between the two of us we can set the groundwork for others to bring back more 2040’s!

Hey man I have a tractor the same model and everything. That clutch disengage situation. Some times the range selector won't go all the way in position sometimes giving that illusion. Hated to see that water. The water in the transmission may cause the brakes to come apart.

I have an 82 2040S. It has a loader attachment. I'm in the process of replacing the loader controls. I can't figure out if it's a closed or open system. The 2040s came with either. Do have the loader ports on your pump. They are right side under the floor board.

No, mine's a 76' the hydraulic lines come straight from the pump hits the power steering and then goes to the back to the lift valve, if I put a front end loader on mine I'll have to tap into the main line, I think, I haven't got to that part yet, I'm still at rebuilding the engine. The later models had different hydraulic systems on them altogether, I saw one at the junkyard with factory remotes and aux hookups, it's a 80 I think.

Any luck getting her started? Generally power, starter, fuel are the main issues, but of course if you don’t know her recent history, do the full fluid/filter change and all after ensuring the flywheel turns.

it is a 78' 2040 jd, there IS a 4020 jd, but it is a much earlier tractor, 2040, 4020 just kept getting tongue twisted.
