John Deere 430 & 455 Cold Start -17 Celsius

This is the first chance I’ve had to coldstart the two diesels. Both are Yanmar 3TNA72UJ, and both fired up pretty well given the conditions.

Never heard a Yanmar surge on startup like that, what a cool sound.

I bought a 1997 455 with 2,000+ hours last spring. The first thing I did was read the operators manual, which instructs you to put it at half throttle before turning the key on. Since that also starts the fuel pump, I'm guessing your need for a second glow plug cycle was because you weren't putting enough fuel into the cylinders. I suspect you've figured that out since making the video. Another thing I did at the start of winter was change the oil to JD Plus 50 II Ow-40, and that made a difference that was evident even then when it wasn't very cold yet. It's been getting plenty of use this winter with all the snow we've had in the Twin Cities, and has always started instantly, although it definitely takes a minute or two to warm up and smooth out on the coldest days. It came with a 40 Loader and I ran across a good deal on a 54" blade - I already had a large walk-behind blower that I still use when we get a lot of snow and I want to spread it out more, but this is my toy and I just like driving it around the neighborhood scooping or plowing and having fun, so the longer it takes, the better. I can't believe how smooth, quiet and fuel-efficient it is, I'm running it just above half throttle most of the time and averaging only 1/2 gph. I'll be posting some videos of my own eventually, but thanks for yours - there aren't a lot of 455 videos on here and I watched every one I could find before deciding it was what I wanted. I couldn't be happier so far.

Saw your other 7 min. video W/ this 430, but for some strange reason there wasn't a way to comment. So I came to this one. Looks like a nice southern NE winter day. Always easier with a few inches of powder, ain't it? I'm in CT, and have a 214 W/ a 38" blower. Love watching these JD lawn tractors blowing snow. Nice to have the suitcase weights. Wish I did. But it sure does make for a long track. You did a good job on your other video too.
