well I fired up the Model A again for those of you that asked and tried to get it moving for a first drive and so I could get it up to the shop... sadly however its leaking coolant like a seive and the right brake is seized up so I still have some more work to do before its ready to go... stay tuned though cause I keep you all posted as I get it fixed

when I was a kid in SD our neighbor used to hire me & my brothers to help with harvest, Threshing & haymaking. He had a '36 A with a Du-all loader on it. That thing had priming cups on the de-compressor taps. I don't know if that was a JD option or after-market or what but it sure made cold starting a damn sight easier. Just fill the cup with gas, open the taps, roll 'er over a couple times & it started right up.

Wait till spring. Water has gathered in the oil in all areas. After you get it out of there, change all the oil in trans, engine and air filter. That single wheel front makes the tractor more rare. Make sure you have oil pressure on start up.

Excellent video....according to your serial number it is a 1935 AN. A single front wheel unstyled AN is very rare. I hope it gets an inside home before it snows.

Dad had a 40 A. It was the second tractor he had. He had had a 37 AC WC that he used to run over my older brother. The 40 A I remember would have an explosion like a 20 ga shotgun when it first started. He got rid of it for a 48 H Farmall. It was all painted up and decaled like a new one. This was around 55. Then he got a 1 row Wood Bros corn picker and we thought we, bro and me were in hog heaven. Course we still had to pick out the ends and 2 or 3 places in the middles, taking 3 or 4 rows each place. Dad got tired of that after one year and bought a #24 IHC 2 row mounted picker. Now there was an end to picking out the rows, BUT we couldnt pull the wagon inside the shed that leaned over the entrance to the corn crib, so he bought a 37 A JD. I started it for the first time by myself when I was 12. He got rid of both the H and the A for a 49 A and a 50 B. around 63. then he bought my uncles 41 M Farmall when he died in 65, and thats what we had when I left home in 68

Good video. I grew up hand cranking either our A or our B since the B - a more modern piece of equipment - hand a none working electric start that my dad refused to fix since he had able bodied sons to start the equipment. Who needed electric starters? Almost be worth the hand cranking to hear that engine though - nothing like it.

@supergrant15 it's a spin start meaning you spin a large metal wheel that terns over the motor basically it's like taking the cord off a pull start and just spinning the wheel.

Need to get a big drill motor with a toilet plunger chucked in it (with a vent hole drilled in it so it doesn't stick on), and try that on the flywheel. Bet it would make starting a breeze.
@JeffTheFarmer365
@JeffTheFarmer365 10 жыл бұрын
Probably not, needs lots of force and if it were to backfire the wheel spins back and can break wrists so it would screw up the drive of the cordless

Randy Lahey I was referring to a big 110V rock-drill motor (yes it would need a generator). We used one to start our nitro-methane flathead nostalgia dragster. Yes, it took quite a bit of juice, but as long as we had the spark retarded, it would start it up fine. Just a ratchet and socket to the bolt on the front of the crank.

What you have to do is pull start. Get chains and a stronger Deere and have 2 people. Get one guy to start the bigger Deere driving and you sit on the A. When he gets going disengage the clutch and put in THE HIGHEST gear then let out the clutch. When it starts disconnect and have fun

Hell no! Just crank the thing. Give it half throttle, full choke, and if the carb is set right at all, within the 3rd or 4rth crank, it should fire right up. That's been my experience with B's and GP's. Belt starting them is much easier on them too, but that's a last resort. Learn how to start them right!
