My Uncle bought a John Deere Tractor in 1946, his son and my cousin still runs it on his little Farm/Cattle Ranch! He did his haying with it again this year, and I got to help out like I did when my Uncle was alive and I was all of 12!

Sound advice that pertains not only to farming. Nothing wrong with quality used equipment.

Its very similar cab as mine... just newer style controls. Thats what we did... payed 50,000 for ours and we mow around 650 acres and 1400 grain acres
@HowFarmsWork8 жыл бұрын
We aren't interested in purchasing one in the short run. It's wise for a farmer to analyze all of his options, especially when there's a long life ahead of him. We've never had one, we wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and would consider purchasing if we continue expanding and raise more cattle and do more custom work.

Im mowing 2500 acres plus a year and I still went with a used mower. But I also had to buy a trailer to transport it which was 12k itself. As a young guy doing custom hay and then my own hay your right, start with used. I would love a new mower but my payment is half what a new one is, so that aloud me to buy another tractor and baler along with the mower and still make the payments of a used machine. You just have to plan on having more repair bills starting out. I know i had to put 7k in repairs on my swather this year and another 13k for a transmission in my tractor but that will atleast get me going so I can make more money quicker and build my custom hay business up.

@srad98ful8 жыл бұрын
he is telling the truth those payments come every month I bought a new combine and I had to get into custom work they don't have the acreage like olf unless they convert row crops into hay land but who does that
@Northern_Farmer8 жыл бұрын
I can buy a good used combine that will do just as much as a brand spanking new one for over half the cost.

@t.c.bowling19348 жыл бұрын
What to say, there is alot of good used equipment if you can find it, however, I think for as much hay Wes has, a new machine was the only route to take. Ryan might be funds given to him.

dido on the payments. if the older paid off machine can do it keep it. save some cash for the upgrade. especially for younger guys like myself and ryan
@itsMEorMe978 жыл бұрын
Yeah you'd think that, but it's often false economy, as it can be cheaper to continue to pay 3000$ a month and get another new machine after trading in the machine that's 3 years old - rather than start having to pay for repairs and then have to find 3000 a month when your then looking to trade the old machine in that has then lost more value than if you had traded it in years earlier

the only thing that I saw with the one he was demonstrating was the tires where backwards but that may be a Midwest thing
@austincampbell72438 жыл бұрын
We used to do that with combines. The rational behind that was that since the machines don't pull anything and you see lots of road time that the tires would last quite a bit longer. Also that if you happened to get into a sloppy mud hole that you would have better traction to back out of the hole. We don't see that much any more but some people still do it.

Ryan from @howfarmswork said in his video that they were not actually looking to buy a machine right now. Rather, I think they were just curious, and it's a way for Sloan Implement to get some exposure and advertising. They also demo'd that gator, but it didn't seem like they were about to buy that either. It is a little strange to be demoing equipment you don't really have an intention to buy, but I suppose if the dealer wanted to give me something to play with, I wouldn't be turning them down!
@Derek_00Mustang838 жыл бұрын
They still have the gator in the video of Ryan test driving the w260 by the house. It's right in front of the machine shed.

More so, we've never driven one and wanted to see how they run. It's wise for a farmer to analyze all of his options. Especially when there's a long life ahead of him.

unless your ARE doing custom work NEVER justify buying equipment with I CAN do custom work. I bought a silo bagger just for myself had someone sent to me by a friend 9 bags a year paid by end of month great. had someone ask I didn't know told him didn't have time got sob story can't find no one else so I said OK. 6 years later still not paid, guys no longer in business so I'm SOL don't mind not being paid for my time I'm more pissed about being screwed out of the 314$ for the silo bag. bottom line buy it if you can make payments by yourself don't have to rely on others to make it work

Unless you're paying his bills any reason he chooses to run his farm differently is valid. Especially when corn prices are in the tank. Not to mention most of us aren't interested in a loss. We're in this to make money and we're going to do what we feel is the most profitable thing we can do at the time.

Judas priest you people have no sympathy towards anyone anymore, you see it's called demo for a reason. Demo is where you get a piece of equipment to try out for future ideas of purchasing machinery, rent is where you pay for a piece of machinery to use in the meantime for extra help or your machine is getting a serious fix, leasing is where you make payments over a couple three years and then return the machine to the dealer where you will more than likely get the updated piece of machinery (which is what most custom harvesters and operators do due to putting on some many hours in a year and getting the most modern and advanced equipment), and then you have flat out buying the machine. +HowFarmsWorks is demoing the W260 to try it out and see how something like that performs and operates, a glimpse into what having a machine like that on your farm would be like. Plus it puts out a good name for the dealer that offers someone the option to demo a piece of machinery as well as advertisement of Ryan's channel. +onelonleyfarmer purchases his equipment because he plans to use it for a lot of production and to keep it around for a while and it gives him to option to do what he wants to it and with it, otherwise I'm sure if he wanted to have the newest machinery and keep updating all the time he would just lease his machinery.
