I find that because you can't see as far at night (even with LED lights) things come up on you quicker and lights make movement look faster than it is so you slow down.

I really enjoy the insight into a way of farming that I'm not familiar with. Your videos are not just show-off of big machinery. There is always something to learn from your explanations. And, although a scale of farming foreign to me, the family is at the center of it all. Grew up on a small family-only pig farm in Denmark in the 60-70'ies, with about 20 ha of barley and 10 ha of potatoes, one David Brown 880 and one very small McCormick Farmall 430.

19 years old? Looks like it just rolled off the factory floor. That's not an accident - good on you for keeping your equipment in top condition. What you said about slowing down after sunset, I had the same problem. What I did was to add aircraft landing lights to the equipment so that I could see further on from where I was working. It's the same sort of argument that you have with driving a car at night and not wanting to drive beyond your headlights. A rack of LED lights on the cab should do the trick.

Draper heads are superior with how they handle the crop. Help get it away from the knife, gentler with lower reel speeds, and gives the machine a nice consistent feed. I have a feeling you'll be buying one, should make it a MacDon. Hate to see that machine go down... Hopefully a quick fix.

for those who may not know, when he talks about 1/4 section that is 160 acres. 1 sq mile = 640 acres more or less. and cutting 300 plus in a day is getting things done. I am not anyway familiar with JD engines, but that older combine probably does not have common rail fuel system , the newer combine may have it and that 680 almost certainly does have common rail fuel system. the major problem with all common rail fuel system is this, if an injector tip gets stuck open or a tip gets blown off, as long as the engine is turning the fuel pump is pushing fuel. that means fuel is going into a cylinder uncontrolled. the ecm can no longer control the fuel, the engine will pick up rpms until parts scatter everywhere. only two chances of stopping it, cut a fuel line or punch a hole in a fuel filter. and the engine still may explode before it runs out of fuel. that old combine has a bosch or similar type fuel pump one pump plunger, metering device per cyl. completely different theory of operation.

Glad you said something about the noise. Ever since the S series came out I’ve heard lots of people say they’re loud inside. I can’t believe it because the previous models were louder as well as any other machine I’ve been in. Maybe they need to be opening their cab doors more often during operation to get a better since of how it really sounds. As well as to listen for any bad noises that can become problems. Keep up the great videos!!

We have had a 680 for 2 seasons now. The first month of rice harvest I bet I didnt run it a full 2 days. It was having all kinds of electrical problems. Since we started harvesting back around Sept 8th or so our john deere bill for the 680 has been 22k. I know other guys who have had the same problems but I also know guys who've never had to turn a wrench on theirs. It's been running good for a couple weeks now so maybe itll be ok after spending over 20k on it I sure hope so. Other machine is a 9870 it's a damn good combine weve always been pleased with it. But I agree they all have problems. You might get a real good one or a real bad one. Weve got 2 jd flex drapers and we love em. We cut rice as well so it's our best option for rice and beans. Hope the rest of your harvest goes well. Its rained every week in northeast Arkansas. Cant get much done like that but it's coming along slowly but surely.

Jake Davis i know what you mean. We farm in northeast Arkansas and like about 500 acres of soybeans. This time last year we had all of our rice ground for this year worked and equipment washed and in the shed and off for the winter. Our 680 had an electrical problem when we first started rice this year and was down 4 days. 3 John Deere mechanics worked on it 4 days in a row. About 22k

@patrickwatson3503
@patrickwatson3503 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. When bean prices were higher it took fewer acres to justify the extra cost but it's still worth it. When he has beans popping out when standing in the field it takes even fewer acres to pay for it. I'd say you can easily justify a draper if you harvest 1000 acres of beans per year. At a minimum you'll get another 1 to 2 bushels per acre but you also pick up ground speed since the beans feed into the combine at a more even pace. Time is money. The combine doesn't have to work as hard when beans feed evenly. I've had a draper for five years and don't regret it. I paid more for the draper than my house but the house doesn't combine beans.

Dont say that to a Deere dealer we wanted to buy a UTV and thought the John Deere gator looked good. So we called the dealer and talked for about 30 min about price and what equipment we wanted in it and when he said as the last thing “Is there any other things you would like to add on the machine?”. We answered paint it Case IH red and when he realesed we werent joking he hanged up the phone immediately and we ended up not buying a John Deere gator

I sure hope y’all have better luck with that S680 than we do ours. Extremely heavy and dont like the mud and watch the fountain auger when foldin ur hopper out. Ours is bad about not seatin correctly and if not checked before cuttin will back up clean grain elevator and tear it off. Stay safe and from one farmer to another thanks for what you do

Not a farmer but loving the videos. I always watch a few before I go to sleep. I count soy beans instead of sheep. To me the host is what makes or breaks what I watch and I think you do a great job. It's informative with just enough wit to keep it interesting. Nice to be able to see the hard work that goes into the food and other products we use. As for slowing down at night, I think it's just human nature, It's harder to see so your brain needs more time to take in information. I think I remember from driver's ed. to slow down 5 MPH at night and another 5 MPH if it is raining. Of course at your speeds that would put you at a dead stop.

My uncle had an old self propeld mower(an IH) with draper heads to cut the barley from his fields;he would let it dry about a week before combining it with a JD #40 combine with a pick-up head;he said the draper heads would gently deposit the plants and the barley beans to the ground without shaking them!

Just food for thought. We put a Crary air reel on our grain table about ten years ago. I love it A LOT less money and you will get nice constant feed in the head blows beans into the auger before they have a chance to hit the ground

I suppose I'm a loyal big red fan as I grew up riding the fender on my neighbor's 806. Also my first job we used only IH equipment. However I am partial to the old John Deere when it comes to utility tractors.

I’ve got it! I’ll make a KZfaq channel in the future about my farming life, only the fact that my farm is, how you say, really poorly taken care of. I’m talking about JD 4230’s, an IH 1066 and a JD 4955, our biggest tractor. The only thing we own that’s fancy is a 9560 JD combine, and that’s it.
