Those are awesome. I always appreciated a good cutaway as a teaching/learning aid. One of my instructors gave some kids a project making a cutaway magneto. The two kids had been struggling with learning how things work and were acting up a bit. It amazed me how the kids jumped in and did a great job. I had to pull that instructor aside and give him an atta-boy. A great instructor knows how to inspire their pupils. You get a big atta-boy too Mr. Pete.

Those are amazing! I recall much earlier on your channel you had a Gravely L tractor. I'm into Gravelys myself and back in the day they made cut aways of real model L tractors and shipped them to dealers. The T head engine, the planetary transmission and even the carburetor are all open. They are still seen sometimes in the Gravely community and are quite collectable.

The 730 cutaway was done by a now long gone machine shop for the Sales department at John Deere. We believe they did between 12 and 20 of them for the 720 tractors which were then updated to 730s when the new series came out. Each one the tractors were slightly unique so the history can be traced well if pictures exist. I'm lucky enough to own one, although it is a wreck from years of neglect. Mine actually has a serial plate stamped "DISPLAY"

@AC fear not, they were also made out of reject castings with flaws, so they don't even have good parts in them.

@mrpete222 actual production information is sketchy. This estimate is linked to first hand accounts that they built one for each branch house plus extras. I believe there are 5 surviving examples, 4 in North America.

@@HotRodTractor When I started working at the Deere dealer we had a cutaway 4010. It was from the Columbus branch house and had been donated to the University at Richmond Ky for their ag mechanics program. 20 years later they felt is was no longer of use and had us come get it. Another 20 years of sitting in our warehouse the owner sold it up to Wisconsin for $50K I believe. Just like this 730 it had a bunch of the parts chromed that normally would have been bare or painted. I think whoever bought it completely redid it but I never saw it again.

I drove an old "B" model in the late 50s and early 60s. Loved that old thing and the sound of it tickled my heart. You had to spin the wheel by hand to start it but it was reliable. That one blew an exhaust valve and that shut her down fast. Haven't a clue how that engine worked because I never worked on it. I think it was a one lunger. 😉

I have literally tapped millions of pipe couplings on a drill press with a procunier tapping head without ever one single problem. We had two of them set up in drill presses and they were used for many years. Every machine shop should have a dedicated drill press with the procunier head just for tapping. You would never look back. Art from Ohio

Great cutaway. My dad put me on his 730 in the early 1960s, fond memories of driving it in Eastern ND. His was electric start, very reliable runner even in winter. Where is that 730 cutaway?

The 720 is really neat. Thanks for finding and showing those cutaways! I could tell a couple stories about a bad 1-1/2 horse JD block and my Barco gas jack hammer or a sad JD snowmobile and the rear wheel of a Rumely 17-30 heavyweight. I'll leave it at that.

This tractor has a 4 cylinder gas engine (pony motor) to start the 2 cylinder diesel engine. The V-4 pony motor sits on top of the diesel and starts with a 6 volt electric starter. As the pony runs, it shares coolant with the diesel engine and warms it up before starting the diesel. The pony's exhaust also goes through a heat exchanger to warm up the diesel engine intake air.
