Great video! Thanks for a nice thorough review of this mower! We just bought a Z315E new zero turn (our first zero turn) and although it's not the same model, it was a very helpful overview of operation. Thanks!

G’day Todd, we have ordered our Z355E a couple of weeks ago and really hoping that we receive it very soon? I’m chafing at the bit to get on it and start mowing our yards. How much properly do you mow with your mower? Thanks so much for sharing your valuable information with me. Cheers from Down Under 🍻

We mow around 5 acres. In the summer we have to mow twice a week somethings. The mower has been great, but we have stepped up to a Z920m with the 60" deck and a faster ground speed just to cut our mowing time. But the Z355e has been a great mower. No issues. I'm sure you will like it.

I mow 5 yards a week including my own and I'd live to have one of these little boogers. They're just residential yards probably less than 2 acres in total. I honestly wouldn't get much use out of it in my own yard because between stacks of firewood, chickens,and our garden I have to many obstacles, but itd be great for the other 4.

Thank you for video, this is probably the 10th video I’ve watched and no mentions the ground speeds. In the specs the 300 series goes about 7 Mph and the 500 series goes 9 mph. Does yours seam fast enough or should I step up to 500 series? Thank you 🙏
@thistlehillfarmstead9131
@thistlehillfarmstead9131 2 жыл бұрын
For the 300 Series mower... It is fast enough. For me... not so much. If you have the option I'd go with the 500 Series. It really depends on how much grass you have to cut and how smooth your lawn is. Can't go fast if your lawn is not smooth enough to allow it. We replaced our 300 Series with a 900 Series Z920M. It has a 60" desk and goes much faster. It made a huge difference in cutting time, but it's definitely a rougher ride at higher speeds. I installed a suspension seat to compensate.

Hey Todd, great video. I am considering a Z345R but had some concerns: The oil drain hose looks like it's just long enough to get the oil all over your rear tire! Does it actually have enough length to comfortably reach a drain pan or do you have to hold it in place during the draining process? It also looks like there are only partial welds on the deck brackets in many places instead of a full welded seam. Also the the bracket metal seems thin and the anti scalping wheel mounts look like they are vulnerable to becoming bent. Have you noticed any issues with the deck, it's construction, or performance? Also, the engine on these is just a basic Briggs Intek, which historically did not always have the best reputation. Any issues so far, engine wise? Front caster bearings/bushings holding up ok (no play in the stem, etc.) Lastly, many people complain about these mowers having some of the weakest frames (smallest tubing) and even say they can feel it flex during use. Any feedback there? Thanks a bunch in advance!
@thistlehillfarmstead9131
@thistlehillfarmstead9131 Жыл бұрын
1) The drain hose is short and does pretty much just get oil all over the frame. I use a flexible funnel ( a flat, malleable piece of plastic which you can bend into the shape you need) or you can just replace the short hose with a longer one. 2) I had no issues with the deck. We have a farm so I have hit many obstacles and really had no issues bending or breaking the deck. With that said there are some pot metal hangers called "lift trunnion" Part # UC11889 that I have broken so I would up just buys several to have on hand. They are cheap. They are the weakest link so better they brake than something more expensive. Also the Blade Spindles have grease fittings, but the are in a spot that is hard to get a regular grease gun pit into. I cracked one spindle housing when I hit a large rock. It had to be replaced. Not a big job. 3) I have not bent the wheels or brackets. 4)No engine issue. We put 300 + hours on it and no issues so far. Cranks easy and runs well. Plenty of power for the 48" deck size. 5) Front casters are fine. No play or excessive wear. The front tires are air filled and I have day a couple flats. 6) The frame seems fine to me. Overall I was very happy with the mower. It cut well and had plenty of power, did not bog down. I have now upgraded to a larger Z920m 60" because we have so much grass to cut that the smaller one was taking us all day. We cut about 5-6 acres. The 920m moves faster and has a wider deck so it cut down our mowing time. Hope this helps

Tube steel frames are tougher than they look. For the most part if you keep up the maintenance it's a fine mower. You can damage parts by hitting things like roots,stumps,curbs,rocks,but for cut quality and price they're hard to beat. I like john deere because of their great dealer network and ability to get parts and maintenance items. I just checked my local cub cadet dealers website the other day and he seems to only have a few residential mowers in stock and most of those were tractors. Hes also an echo dealer and I tried multiple times to get a saw from him,but he didnt have stock and said I could order it and wait 6-8 weeks for delivery. My john deere dealers also sell stihl and both their mowers and saws are well stocked,so I bought a new stihl instead. I currently run a cub cadet mower and it's been good mower,but I'm lookin for a john deere to replace it with shortly.

@mellowjammer Жыл бұрын
@@ciphercode2298 Well, I think that even John Deere has recognized that they have one of the wimpiest frames out there (on the Z300 series, anyway) and a dealer tells me they are about to announce some frame upgrades for new models. But I agree with you...if you don't abuse the machine the frame will hold up... but you CAN feel it flex at times. I guess John Deere has heard enough complaints to do something about it.

I'm having a problem with finding the correct part # for the deck belt.. At Lowe's Hardware it says that the Mower Belt # GX21833 is the correct number... However, the number you used is a totally different number .. I looked to see if there was a another JD Belt for the Z355 but didn't see anything... Is this belt only available at the JD Dealer ? And what is the correct part # ?? These belts are super tight, I'm surprised they don't break putting them on...
@thistlehillfarmstead9131
@thistlehillfarmstead9131 Жыл бұрын
I was told that the 48" Deep deck uses a different belt than a standard 48" deck. There are several part numbers from JD which can make it confusing.

I purchased a brand new one last year and the Manual says to change oil after the first 50 hours of usage. I only put 7 hours of usage on it the first year. It may take several years before I hit 50 hours. Should I wait until I hit 50 hours which may take several years or just change oil out every 2 years or so even if less than 50 hours?
@thistlehillfarmstead9131
@thistlehillfarmstead9131 2 жыл бұрын
If you have only put 7 hours on the machine you probably don't have to worry about an oil change. In some cases manufacturers recommend what they call a "Beak-In" oil change. This is because any new engine has to break-in. During this break-in period there can be higher than normal metal partials released into the oil. By changing the oil shortly after they engine has been running, you get rid of any partials that may have accumulated during the break-in period. So it never hurts to change your oil too often... only hurts if you don't change it often enough. Hope this helps

How often do you sharpen blades? Are they easy to get to to sharpen?
@thistlehillfarmstead9131
@thistlehillfarmstead9131 Жыл бұрын
I really depends on how much you cut and the types of grass you cut. They best way to tell if your mower blades need sharpening is to look at the grass closely. If the blades of grass are being torn and are frayed at the ends and not cut cleanly they blades need sharpening.
