The PMRC, headed by Tipper Gore and the other "Washington wives" put together senate hearings to produce some legislation regarding music lyrics. John Denver called it censorship.
Rock Lyrics Record Labeling
Sep 19, 1985
Senate Committee Commerce, Science and Transportation
The committee heard testimony on the objectionable content of some rock music lyrics. Opponents of these lyrics want legislation requiring labels on rock music products.

The 80s weren't like what we see in more recent years, though. A lot of rap music is dangerously anti-social, railing against women and cops. But now it's "racist" to criticize nasty thug lyrics.

+Comicbookstoreguy177 Yet, I was never stopped from buying and listening to anything that I wanted to. So how did a chain store not carrying it stop me from getting what I wanted? All that happened was a chain store losing money by me buying what I wanted somewhere else. The music did not go away at all, labeled or not.

+ Comicbookstoreguy177 Yes, great point sir. That was one of the great evils of the idiotic PMRC and the record labeling nonsense. In the pre-Internet days people in towns that didn't have legitimate record stores, but only crap merchants like Wal-Mart, would get stuck with the censored version of an album -- or if it was especially "scary," they wouldn't carry it at all.

John Denver told a room full of politicians that pearl-clutching parents like the group that brought him there were responsible for many pre-adult suicides. His message is the banner that metal artists wave vigorously above their heads to signal teens with trouble in the home that they can come to them and find peace. I love how this blew up in their faces. They probably brought John Denver on because he was a mellow country guy and they figured he'd be offended by metal and be on their side, but instead he (eloquently) owned them. LOVE his message at the end too, that's maybe even more relevant today and everyone should have a chance to hear it.

@@leifleoden5464 Denver died on October 12, 1997, when his experimental Rutan Long-EZ plane, aircraft registration number N555JD, crashed into Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove, California. Denver was not legally permitted to fly at the time of the crash. In previous years, he had several drunk driving arrests. In 1996, nearly a year before the accident, the Federal Aviation Administration learned that Denver had failed to maintain sobriety by not refraining entirely from alcohol so they revoked his medical certification. However, the accident was not influenced by alcohol use since an autopsy found no sign of alcohol or other drugs in Denver's body. Post-accident investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) showed that the leading cause of the accident was Denver's inability to switch fuel tanks during flight. The quantity of fuel had been depleted during the plane's flight to Monterey and in several brief practice takeoffs and landings Denver performed at the airport immediately prior to the final flight. His newly purchased experimental Rutan aircraft had an unusual fuel tank selector valve handle configuration. The handle had originally been intended by the plane's designer to be located between the pilot's legs. The builder instead put it behind the pilot's left shoulder. The fuel gauge was also placed behind the pilot's seat and not visible to the person at the controls. An NTSB interview with the aircraft mechanic servicing Denver's plane revealed that he and Denver had discussed the inaccessibility of the cockpit fuel selector valve handle and its resistance to being turned.

As a death metal fan i will never feel much love for his music. But i will never stop feeling overwhelming respect for this man. And also for his craft, just because a type of music does not meet the personal taste does not mean that you have to disrespect it, it is part of what makes the world beautiful. The only sad thing is that he died way too young, i would feel immense pride if i had the chance to shake his hand one day. Johns music obviously was a blessing for everyone who liked that style. His contributions though are a blessing for every single music lover and musicians no matter the style.

What a beautiful man John Denver was -- he gave the world his incredible music, and he absolutely made the world a better place. When he left us we lost a part of our best selves. His speech to the Tipper Gore censorship committee was at the time shocking as Denver was considered a "conservative" musician, unlike Zappa or Dee, and Gore et al. expected Denver to support their ridiculous proposals. But his eloquent, soft-spoken presentation, filled with incisive points and devastating examples (the horrible censorship of "Rocky Mountain High"), dealt a major blow to the idiocy of the PMRC. From what I remember -- they (the politicians) all thought Denver would support their agenda. Then, he simply lowered the boom. Clean cut John Denver was as equally compelling as Frank Zappa. These politicians just "didn't get it," as politicians continue to do today. Their ignorance is legendary and we continue to re-elect these disconnected from reality individuals. Oh, they're all smart & have degrees. But, you see sometimes the more educated you are -- the more stupid you can become. Their concerns are genuine but how they go about their business of fixing things -- is really -- politically incorrect. All you needed was ONE politician on that panel who was an old Elvis fan & it would have made for a compelling battle. Their old counterparts in the 50's didn't win against Elvis' shaky hips (especially since Ed Sullivan was in Elvis' corner) & THEY expected to win against Zappa, Denver & Dee Snider in the 80's? During these these hearings, John Denver was "Ed Sullivan." Snider softened them up, Zappa got them winded & on the ropes, but Denver delivered the knock out.

Indeed, The Eagle and The Hawk was played at my mum's funeral in 2016, and will be played at mine when it is my time to stand with my beloved parents again. An extremely impressive musician to a girl from East Yorkshire in the UK. I believe he was a deeply intelligent man who had a profound connection with God, and the beauties of this world. He's an artist that, to this day, affects me in such a way that, along with the bittersweet joy I feel in his music, there is also a heart breaking sadness in his passing. John Denver loved life and sang about the beauty of what God created. He has made many references in his music about God and basically in his own way honoring and thanking him for creating all of the beautiful things we have from the majestic mountains, all our wildlife on land and sea, John appreciated and wanted to preserve and clean up what mankind was doing like polluting the water or building in places where it encroached on wild animals in their own habitat. Pretty much all of his songs were singing about good things, things that mattered. I wish there were more musicians who could follow his example of how important it is to appreciate and respect each living thing, whether it's an animal or the trees, the beautiful streams and rivers, so much beauty in this world and we all need to do our part to keep it clean for the next generation. God Blessed us with John Denver. He taught us to appreciate all the little things and to love nature. He stood up for what he believed in. He loved seeing the wonder of the dolphins and whales swimming and being free to live as they were meant to. His love for Eagles, horses and their freedom to fly and run it all touched his heart and soul and the warmth of the Sun. He made a positive impact in this world. His life and music made me appreciate life more. I love how he lead his life and shared with us how felt through his many songs. A gentle and caring spirit he had. I have great respect for him and appreciate his gift of singing!! :-) :-) :-)

This reminds me of Fred Rogers testifying in front of politicians. Both standing up for what they believed. I never knew JD did this hearing. He's amazingly intelligent, thoughtful and articulate in both his prepared speech and answers to their questions. His words then still stand today, parents and the home life matters. Pay attention to your children, it may very well be your most important job in life and does reach beyond your lifetime into the future.

My mom played his music a lot when I was little in the 70s. I didn’t care for it. But as a PhD student who studies rhetoric and argument, I found the late Mr. Denver’s lucid and solid claims and explanations compelling. I respect his eloquence and care in this speech.

JDs testimony was so right on and the best point he made was for parents not to listen to their kids music to judge the artist, but to know what they're kids are thinking! Be brave enough to ask them what that songs means to them! Be involved. The guy was one of a kind - there has never been another like him! Great music, great talent, great human - he left us to soon....

I knew years ago that John Denver did more damage to the PMRC than Dee Snyder did. And I'm an old school 80's metal head. God bless this man. Side note. I'm proud to have understanding parents. They raised two teenagers during the late 60's. So by the time I came around nothing I did or listened to made them flinch. Thanks mom and dad. Rest your souls. 💖

One of the things I think makes this speech so great is that he doesn't make himself seem like an underdog or attacked. He says his points in a way that they can speak to everybody without attacking anybody and that way doesn't make people in the hearing defensive but receiving. We need more conversation like this where the issue is adressed without trying to make the opposite side look like clowns even if they would be. He has respect for each and everyone listening while still going against their views. I love Dee Snider's speech but his attitude also made PMRC defencive and they didn't really want to even take his words into consideration. Like all conversation today but it's just even worse. Maybe what I just wanted to say here is that he doesn't make this about him being absolutely right and everyone else being absolutely wrong. That's conversation, not arguing.

Their son is an adult no longer under the watch or control of his parents therefore is responsible for his own actions. You can't blame Tipper for his adult decisions, you choose your own path in life, he committed no crimes during his childhood but chose to go down that path as an adult. Note how none of her other children are criminals as well. There's a "bad seed" in pretty much every "normal" family.

DEE SNIDER INTERVIEW FROM ROLLING STONE: Did you meet with Frank Zappa and John Denver beforehand? I met Frank for the first time in some office where we waited to give testimony. Our main concern was what John was gonna do. We never got to see him. We knew he should be on our side, but he was such an all-American boy. He was a movie and TV star and he had his annual Christmas show. He was literally coming in that day from an interview with NASA about possibly becoming the first musician in space. So we were like, “What is he gonna do?” Were your fears warranted? No. His testimony was the most damaging, ’cause it was so unexpected. He made such powerful statements, likening the censorship movement to the Nazi book burnings. My God, you shouldn’t have seen the back-pedaling. He was righteous.

I was a huge John Denver fan and he was a great choice to go in there with Zappa and Snider because his music was so polar opposite to theirs and had also been so mainstream popular with adults, right down to prime time TV appearances and winning the Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year award. His testimony is generally fine as well. However, "Rocky Mountain High" was definitely a double entendre taken in the context of the time. Sure you could get high just looking at mountains and meteors, but back in the day Denver openly admitted to getting stoned up in the mountains and went on about how great it was.
