For John Dewey there was nothing as important as education, not only on an individual level, but also on the societal. He was a champion of democracy and longed to see it thrive, but in order for this to occur he knew that we must first take the necessary steps to build an educational system which allowed for each citizen to make full use of his/her capacity.

Education is democracy. Our system of Government fails without it.

Lovely, this is not my work filed that life gave it to me but there is something in me, in my inner world that loves everything related to Educaton or children or what the Germans called "‏Bildung". That's why I'm deeply interested on philosophers such as John Dewey, Russell and Rousseau. Thanks for sharing this kind of subjects on KZfaq, God bless you.

America’s greatest thinker, though you wouldn’t know it from studying philosophy in American universities. It’s very difficult to summarize any one area of Dewey’s thought. I’ve heard Dewey scholars struggle to describe his theory of education in a way that doesn’t come across as flat or trivial. I mean, it seems obvious that education is most effective when the material taught is presented in a way that evokes the attention and interest of the learner, as opposed to a mere pouring-in of knowledge assumed to be passively absorbed. Duh! But then you go to the text itself and discover the astonishing range and depth of his ideas, and it quickly becomes clear that there is a rigorous systematic interplay among all the moving pieces. The connections are subtle but also very precise, and they don’t seem to want to fit together in any nutshell summary (much to my own chagrin!). All of that is to say that this is a really nice video that will succeed in piquing the curious viewer’s interest. I would encourage teachers to read Experience and Education for a relatively brief overview of Dewey’s philosophy of education. He shows clearly what progressive education is, and what it is not. Democracy and Education (1916) is the theory’s more systematic elaboration, and it is a masterwork among many masterworks. Others gems include Experience and Nature (1925), Art As Experience (1934), The Quest for Certainty (1928), Logic: The Theory of Inquiry (1938), etc. Dewey’s political writings are a pleasure to read, and they provide a deluge of untapped resources for the self-understanding and advancement of progressive political action. Thx again for your contribution! ❤
