I saw this car in it's previous body at the Brighton speed trials 1973?, it was a better looker then. Still a legend all these years later, good to see this video.

was reading an artical in Classic and Sportscar about the BEAST.Glad it's still out their and beening used.i remember it when it had the second bodywork on it(the one painted purple and looking a bit like a coupe(god i AM old!lol) what a brilliant wagon! give your dad all my best wishes please,he is a HERO in my book!

Soosie, Fantastic film, remember reading about this in a car mag as a kid, really nice to see John still has the car and its still out and about. Wasn't to sure about the Soft Cell Tainted Love tune but then you redemeed yourself with my fav tune Robert Miles Children so as far a KZfaq Video's go they don't get any better than this Cheers once again

Soosie just recieved the latest copy of Octane and loving the fact that both legends (Man & Machine) had a feature in there. Gotta love the fact as stated in the article while it was over here he got or brought it over just with the intention of getting one last GB road tax disc saying it was a Rolls Royce before the UK paper tax disc are phased out. As possibly many on here don't know the history of the car and the court cases brought by Rolls Royce i really hope your dad did it just for the tax disc. As before a quality video and a class bit of good old British engineering.

Firstly, what a fantastic piece of automotive engineering. Absolutely fantastic!! Having said that & not wanting to sound, err, sexist here, BUT, if you want to make a video about a car... Don't ask a girl to do it!!! I'm a bit miffed, instead of hearing the engine as it's driving down the road, we get "treated" to Tainted Bloody Love!! The bonnet/hood gets lifted, do we get to see the motor properly? NO we do not!! Then we get treated to a few minutes of staring at the dashboard, FABULOUS!!

it weighs over 2tons so 5 secs is incredible, especially for an engine which was meant for props

I may be wrong but, I am sure it was John who rebuilt my father's (big John ledster) gearbox on his mk1 Jensen interceptor. and delivered it to santa pod by light aircraft during a meet at santa pod.

Its a meteor tank engine ,yeh same as a Merlin but not supercharged , this is Doddomobile no 2 , the 1st caught fire I saw no 1 in 1972 at the Belle Vue customs show

This car's such a laugh. It's the only car I know of where, when it's ticking over, the FANBELT is louder than the exhaust lol

I think the whirring noise is the step-up gearbox between the engine and transmission. This is needed because the engine runs much slower than car engines normally do, and the gearbox is a conventional automatic transmission unit albeit strengthened and modified.

this car had around 850hp and made around 245mph under a test drive, this is a road plane :)

4:47 - 5:18 most of the engine rumble we're hearing is actually from the Beast, isn't it? I'd love to see more home movies of it like this! The site allows for much higher video clarity now than it did in 2009.

I believe that is the sound of the dual magnetos in the ignition system. When the car is at speed that sound is drowned out by the sound of the Merlin, but it is still there.

Whats with the whirring sound I hear in most of the Beast videos? Is that just the sound the engine makes when its idle is down low enough to make the car drive slowly? Does it only lose this sound when its going at higher speeds?

So strange and otherworldly that sound is. It's all mechanical noise. I couldn't tell what, if anything, was the exhaust note!

Jet engines are just about the same really,airplane engines are a lot more simple than most people think.

The gearbox and transmission proberly,even a modern mini and a 1000 other cars have the same sound

You do some research, you are right about the meril spitfire engine, but this particular one doesn't have a supercharger, they made it like that, and by "they" I'm talking about the person who designed the car and engine.

@ghostrider0749 No brand....apart from having a Rolls Royce Merlin aeroengine the bodywork is a unique design around the chassis specially made from fibreglass.......... the front windscreen is from a Jensen Interceptor .....etc., etc. ....a unique vehicle!
