Hi, and thanks for the listen! The quality of the Roosebeck is decent enough; the tone is quiet nice and projects well. The tuning can be a bit tricky, especially with a capo (have to re-tune for almost every capo change). Having said all that I am quite happy with it. Mind you it is not really a lute, but a lute-shaped guitar. Also beware of the models with wooden tuning pegs. They're very hard to tune precisely, and I broke a peg because they were so hard to crank. I exchanged it for this one.

Beautiful interpretation! That is why I prefer so far classical guitar and lute upon folk and electric guitar. They have a warm sound, ancient history and a great polyvalence. Indeed, you can with no probelm play rock if you want with a classical guitar.

rhayader0625 It's actually base on the the German Lute Guitar. It's Lute Shape Spanish Guitar that's very common in Germany. The Vocal Version of this piece is called "Flow my Tears" I decided to do it in German called "Fließen meine Tränen" Lass meine Tränen fließen, fall aus deinen Quellen Für immer verbannt, lass mich trauern Wo der schwarze Vogel der Nacht ihre traurige Schande singt Dort lass mich verlassen leben Nieder eitle Lichter, leuchte dich nicht mehr Dafür ist keine Nacht dunkel genug Die in Verzweiflung ihr verlorenes Vermögen beklagen Licht offenbart nur Scham Niemals mögen meine Leiden gelindert werden Da ist Mitleid geflohen Und die Tränen und Seufzer und Stöhnen, meine müden Tage Meine müden Tage sind aller Freuden beraubt Vom höchsten Turm der Zufriedenheit Mein Vermögen ist geworfen Und Angst und Kummer und Schmerz für meine Wüsten, für meine Wüsten Sind meine Hoffnungen, da die Hoffnung weg ist Horch, ihr Schatten, die in Finsternis wohnen Lerne Licht zu verachten Glücklich, glücklich sie das in der Hölle Fühlen Sie sich nicht trotz der Welt Horch, ihr Schatten, die in Finsternis wohnen Lerne Licht zu verachten Glücklich, glücklich sie das in der Hölle Fühlen Sie sich nicht trotz der Welt

Thank you sir, it was certainly my most ambitious piece, and not easy to pull off in one take. As for Alman, I modeled it after the Konrad Ragossnig version, which is even faster than I played it. But it probably would have sounded better if I'd slowed it down a bit ;-) Cheers!

I got so fed up in the time it took to tune my traditional lute that I brought with me from England when I emigrated 37 years ago that I decided to build my own lute, but with machine tuners, fixed frets and nylon strings. It stays in tune, and I don't have to slacken off the strings at night to prevent the bridge getting pulled off. My lute is very similar to yours, except that I built mine with double courses.
@rhayader0625

Hi Alan. I bought the lute guitar because I'd been asked to play some lute music at a RenFaire with only two months to prepare. I didn't think I'd have time to become proficient on a real lute, as I'd never played one before. Actually I first ordered the version of the lute guitar with wooden tuning pegs, but it was so hard to tune precisely, and the pegs were so hard to crank I broke one of them within days of receiving it. So I returned it for this one, with machine heads. I had no idea an authentic lute would be so troublesome, as you describe. Very impressive you built your own. Are you a luthier?
@alanfbrookes9771
@alanfbrookes9771 7 жыл бұрын
As proficient as you are on the guitar, learning the lute is mainly a matter of adapting to a different tuning, and getting used to the fact that it's a delicate instrument, so you don't pluck the strings so hard, and you rarely strum it. Imagine the G chord on a guitar. If you raise the fifth string by a tone and the 6th string by three semitones, then lower the first string by a tone, you have open G. This is one of the main lute tunings,. It also happens to be the main Dobro tuning. Now go one step futher and drop the second string by a semitone. You're in G min. I have my lute tuned to F#min., which is what I've just described but with all the strings down by half a tone. Another tuning is to tune to an open G#min by taking the Amin chord of a guitar down one fret.

Thanks, Oscar! I used a Shure SM-57 in front of the guitar, just out of view. So about 2 feet away, through a Peavey mixer straight into GarageBand. The only post processing I did was maybe add a bit of treble and some reverb. Tried to make it sound as natural as possible.

Hi Gabriele, and thanks! It's a Roosebeck Lute Guitar, which I bought from this site: dalymusic.com/store/lute-guitar-6-string-variegated-gears-maple/ . I knew nothing about it before I bought it either, just did as much research as I could for something within my budget. I'm very happy with it. I studied classical guitar myself, back in college. This is similar in feel, but actually easier to play because the fretboard isn't as wide, making it easier to wrap my thumb around for F-type chords as I would on an electric guitar. I have more descriptions below in my answers to previous comments. Ciao, and thanks again!

Hi Brandon! Same with me, I'm mostly a rock musician. Didn't think I'd have the patience to learn a traditional lute, so I got this one. I play it much more than my classical guitar. No idea about tablature, unfortunately. I used to play this piece back in college as a music major, and just picked it up purely by ear this time around. And by watching another guy play it on KZfaq, to figure out hand positioning.

Want lute music? They wrote all of their music in the 1500's in tablature, so there is no need to be able to read music. Do a search for Sarge Gerbode. This guy has put up on the web thousands of pieces of lute music through the Renaissance.

Ian anderson Hi Ian, and thanks for the listen. I think the lute guitar was a nice investment, considering I ordered it without being able to try it out first. The main thing I notice about it is how light it is, for how well it projects the sound. As you can hear in the video, it's rich, yet bright. I didn't EQ the sound at all, just mic'd it with an SM57 and added a bit of reverb. I like the fact that the neck is slimmer than a classical guitar, so my thumb can wrap around for the F chords. My only complaint is the intonation is such that I have to retune for capo changes, but it's not too bad. What you hear in this video is what you get. Best of luck!

Dan, thanks a lot for your reply ! I absolutely agree - it's sounds very and very nice ! But i wonder not about sound, but about quality of this guitar. As i know, they made their guitars in Pakistan. Not in USA like Gibson, not in UK, like F.e. Brook Guitars, but in Pakistan :) So could you tell me,what are you thinking about quality of their wood, machine tuners, bridges and etc.. Dan, thanks in advance for your help and answer. There are only few reviews of Roosebeck guitars on Ethernet. And just only your videos with this guitar on KZfaq :) Alex
@rhayader0625

Ian anderson Well, I'm no expert with guitar and lute craftmanship. All I can really offer is that the quality seems comparable to my Harabe classical guitar. The machine heads are screwed into gilted metal plates, on each side of the headstock, themselves screwed in with 4 screws. The bridge appears to be glued onto the body, as with my Harabe. All in all it seems OK, but as I said above it's very lightweight wood, and does seem a bit fragile. I've had it for over 3 years now, and the only trouble I've had with it is the G string broke one time, not even while I was playing it. Just looked at it one day and realized it broke at the nut. Could have been a bad string, or a sharp spur on the nut. I will say that if you're concerned about tuning then go for the model with the machine heads. I initially ordered the model with tuning pegs, and they were so hard to crank that I broke one of them right in half. And it was constantly going out of tune. I exchanged it for this model, and am happy with it. I'm sure it's not the greatest quality instrument out there, but was in my price range.

@rhayader0625

I couldn't tell you, because I've never played an actual lute. This is just a lute-shaped guitar. I majored in classical guitar in college, with an emphasis on Renaissance lute music, so I play this instrument as if it were a classical guitar (with a slightly slimmer neck, making it easier to wrap my thumb around for some low notes). I would love to learn the lute some day, but I'm really an electric guitarist, and just do this occasionally for fun.

I used to play classical guitar, a long time ago, so I just put on a set of Augustine Blues. The strings that came with the lute guitar were nylon, but with ball ends. I'd never seen those before, and couldn't find any when it came time to replace them. So I just tied the ends of the Augstines into knots like you would on a classical guitar, and it worked fine.

Absolutely, it's exactly the same. The only weird thing you have to get used to is the curved shape of the back of the body. There is no good way to keep it from sliding off your leg, when sitting, and even standing up with a strap it keeps sliding face upward. When seated I have to keep a pad of foam rubber on my leg to keep it from doing that.

I am thinking of one of these or the Thomann guitar lute for use in a Ren-Baroque ensemble. Seems Daly is out of business, but there are sites where I can order one. Is this the nylon or steel version? Looks like a pin bridge, but sounds like nylon. Here is my (less ornamented) version of the Dowland: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edCYeNiZ3ryckmg.html

Yes, right on both points. It's nylon string, but also a pin bridge. Kind of surprised me too when I got it, but this lute guitar came with ball-end nylon strings. They were too loose for me, so I put on a set of Augustine Blues, tied knots in the ends and forced them into the pin holes - lol. Thought it sounded better. Eventually I found some high-tension ball end strings that sound alright, but in these recordings it's the Augustines. Nice job on the Pavan, by the way. I'm not familiar with that piece.

Any quality issues? It appears your recording is 6 years back. The current Roosebecks are a little different, with a tie bridge: andreasinc.com/lute-guitar-6-string-variegated-gears/ I like the "moustache" saddle on yours. On the current ones, the steel string version has that. As to the Dowland, it is the same one you are doing, but in Am, no capo, a lot less ornamented, and way too fast! I will look at yours for guidance.
@rhayader0625
@rhayader0625 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, these recordings were made 6 years ago, about 3 months after I bought it. I think the quality is fair enough, for a $500 instrument. I only have two complaints. Some of the strings buzz a bit when using a capo. So for the first 4 frets I use a standard, slightly arced capo, and for anything 5th fret and above I use a longer, flatter one, which helps a bit. Also the intonation is such that I need to adjust the tuning for any capo change. Once it's in tune it plays fine.
