I can be happy the rest of my life
With a cinnamon girl.
A dreamer of pictures I run in the night
You see us together, chasing the moonlight,
My cinnamon girl.
Ten silver saxes, a bass with a bow
The drummer relaxes and waits between shows
For his cinnamon girl.
A dreamer of pictures I run in the night
You see us together, chasing the moonlight,
My cinnamon girl.
Pa send me money now
I'm gonna make it somehow
I need another chance
You see your baby loves to dance
Yeah...yeah...yeah.

John really nails the feel of this song, the laid back, sexy, rocky bottom, the soaring freedom supporting the higher vocals, even the solo some songs are kind of sacred John brings this home

Just learned JE had covered NY's "Cinnamon Girl" and had to hear it. I was lucky enough to meet the Ox. It was 1987, Wash DC, the Bayou Club. A friend was trying to become a music journalist and - taking me along - talked his way backstage to interview JE. Honestly, I don't recall the Q&A aspect (it was 1987!) of it. All I remember is being in the presence of (and talking with) a legend, and to some, the best rock bassist ever. Shook Brian May's hand once. Doesn't compare. What an experience.

This is a bonus track taken off the re-release of one of Entwistle's solo albums from the early '70s. It wasn't considered good enough to be included on the original release, and it might not have even undergone full production. The footage of him in the red suit is from Rick Wakeman's Gas Tank TV show (1983) - there are a couple of clips of this on KZfaq.

This song is credited to Neil Young but some people thinks it was in fact written by John, who decided to "give" it to Young at some point. We'll never know, I guess, but the lyrics are kinda Entwistle-esque. Not sure about the music 'tho. Anyway my favourite "Smash..." song will always be Heaven and Hell. What a great album...

@ben909ben Nice to hear back from you - not sure "led me to Whatever" means? In case it helps, "Waterloo Sunset" is by the Kinks, 'What Do I Get" by the Buzzcocks, "How Sweet to be an Idiot" by Neil Innes, "Cemetery Gates" by the Smiths & "Heroes and Villains" by the Beachboys. Of your other faves, I think "Helpless" (like "Love Hurts") is a great song with strong, hard and pure emotion. I also love the epic "Tangled Up in Blue" and, just a little less, "Riders on the Storm." Great choices!

@ben909ben I love your description of the song and your poignant comment that "some songs are kind of sacred." That's exactly how I feel about this song. At the risk of introducing disagreement instead of perfect harmony, which we've achieved so far, what other songs would you call sacred? A few of mine would be: "Pictures of Lily," "Waterloo Sunset," "What Do I Get," "Born to Run," "How Sweet to be an Idiot," "Cemetery Gates" and "Heroes and Villains."

@Whofan1000 Thank you, Whofan, the beauty of music, is we can all have sacred songs, and it still adds up to harmony. Hard to imagine anyone else pulling off "Born To Run"! For me, I would add "Helpless", which k.d. lang did a righteous version of, "Riders on the Storm", and "Tangled up in Blue". I'll go look some of yours up. Yeah - Pictures of Lily, Who else could write that, Who else would play the French Horn on it like that, and Who else would contribute such backing vocals?

@A10thunderbolt No, it's definitely him. Besides the fact that it's on a reissue of one of his solo CDs, I'm also sure because I remember back somewhere around 1970 reading an article in which Entwistle said that he loved the song and was thinking of recording it. Since the Who were my favorite band and "Cinammon Girl" was one of my favorite non-Who songs, I was excited and looking forward to it. And now, a mere 40-some years later, I get to hear it! Thanks to Doctorzaius for posting it!

@rpmhart No, this was released in 1971. Frampton toured with Bowie in the late '80s. Not that that matters, as he didn't even play on this. It was Dave "Cyrano" Langston, who seems to have come out of obscurity to record this album and then gone right back in. Gain, in this context, refers to the input stage of a guitar amp, which when turned up overdrives the next stage and produces distortion. Loadman842 would like Townsend to sound more like a 14 year old boy trying to sound like Townsend.
