The visit of United States President John F.Kennedy to Cork in June 1963, as part of his tour of Ireland, was one of the biggest events ever staged in the city. Huge crowds gathered in Patrick Street and around City Hall to see the Presidential motorcade.
On 28th June, 1963, Kennedy was awarded the Freedom of Cork City by Lord Mayor Sean Casey at a special meeting of the City Council, in token of our pride that this descendant of Irish emigrants should have been elected to such an exalted office and of our appreciation of his action in coming to visit the country of his ancestors; as a tribute to his unceasing and fruitful work towards the attainment of prosperity and true peace by all the people of the world, and in recognition of the close ties that have always existed between our two countries.

I listened to the news of President Kennedy's visit to Ireland on a radio station at the Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines, where I was stationed as a Marine Corps corporal.

Only Joking with ya pal-Cork gave us Irelands greatest son-and in my opinion the true "Uncrowned King of Ireland"-even a Jackeen must concede that much-

@irishgeal1 Interesting story behind this. The 6 counties PM Terence O'Neill hoped to invite JFK to the North to see the NATO military contributions there, and when Harold Macmillan found out, he give his Unionist counterpart absolute hell for it. As ridiculous as this sounds, the only person a Tory mistrusts more than an Irish republican is a Unionist. With regards Irish WW2 service, more British military personnel (my grandad included) came from the Republic than the North.

@@kieransavage3835 so did the UK. The UK was only defending itself. As a world power it had the opportunity to opposé the fascists starting in Spain, but tacitly supported them instead.

The Irish Lad I could only glimpse the Motorcade, As it travelled quickly past; I was caught up in the swirling crowd, And blocked by a big fat lady’s ass. I managed just to see his head, That months later would explode, When evil men set out to kill - But that day the Irish Lad was home. I ran fast past the moving crowd, Down to the City Hall, And watched him mount the marble steps, Then turn to speak to all. He had this odd gesture, Where he used his hand to brush his hair back like a comb, Months later it would be soaked in blood - But that day the Irish Lad was home.
