John Kennedy Jr. was American royalty and a cultural icon. His promise of living out his political legacy bequeathed to him on the day of his father’s assassination, was cut short over the Atlantic Ocean one July night. Kennedy’s death and that of his wife and sister-in-law, were the result of a series of bad decisions Kennedy had made during his last day. A day plagued by stress when his life depended on his ability to think clearly. Final 24 examines the string of errors that led to his tragic demise.

If he chose to take a risk with the lives of 2 women in the balance then that's simply irresponsible. No sugarcoating needed here

Jackie tremendous respect. As a Mom she made him promise to not fly. If only he had listened. She had had enough tragedies to know not to take risks 😭

I swear the Kennedys must have lived on an ancient Native American burial ground or something.

I was 12 years old, and I remember it being all over the television, just like it was yesterday. It was when coverage began to be 24/7 and the internet had really taken off, and it was on all day, and night.

RIP to all three. I think there might have been a bit of a death wish involved here. Certainly not suicide, but risk taking so extreme that it may as well have been. The sad thing is that Lauren (her sister) got caught up in this. It was a very selfish move for him to fly this route, at that time, in those conditions, with his skills. Nuts flying a plane like that in IFR conditions without experience. And not taking the land route with a horizon, ugh. Bad decisions compounding. Anyway, RIP.

I watched a video recently, made by a pilot who is expert in the type of plane flown by John. He said that John had flown the same route almost 40 times in the prior 18 months, five trips of which had been at night. He was very knowledgeable about the route he was taking, and experienced with taking it at night. Nobody knows exactly what happened, but we do know that he was only about three miles from landing, almost there, but did not contact the landing airport radio tower. The assumption is that he took his eyes off the instruments when, mystified as to not be hearing from the landing tower, he fumbled around for paperwork to check as to whether he was set for the correct radio frequency.. When he looked back up, maybe 10 seconds later, something had happened to make the plane veer in a way that he could not correct. (He had most likely already disengaged autopilot, in preparation for landing). After just a few seconds, the plane had veered away from the shoreline, and he was disoriented by the complete darkness. He then made the wrong correction, resulting from his disorientation, and the plane crashed. Had his radio not had problems, the accident would not have occurred. It could have happened to anyone. It's best to always have a co-pilot, in case the pilot has to look away, for a minute, or less. You need two sets of eyes on those instruments and buttons. This is why so many private planes crash, as compared with commercial flights--no co-pilots.

Honestly this sounds like he had a death wish....he usually takes a Co pilot, but on this particular day, he decides not to take one? He knows it’s getting dark, but decides to fly anyway? Everything is getting delayed, and despite his inexperience, he decides to still make the trip? Either he was on a suicidal mission or he really wasn’t the best decision maker when it comes to serious life situations.

John Jr. made a series of errors in judgment that day that led to the tragedy. You don't want that in a pilot.
