John Field, inventor of the Nocturne. That is all most people know about this remarkable and influential Irish composer. Born in 1782 in Dublin, he became one of the most celebrated pianist-composers of the early-Romantic age. Admired by his contemporaries Hummel, Moscheles and Kalkbrenner, he also drew praise from Chopin (upon whose music he exerted a huge influence) and Schumann.
‘Discovered’ by Clementi in London in 1794, he was given a thorough musical education by the great Italian master, who quickly recognised the 11-year-old’s talent. Moving in circles that included J.B. Cramer, Dussek and Gyrowetz, he performed before Joseph Haydn in London. In 1799 he premiered his Piano Concerto No.1 in E flat to huge acclaim, and followed it quickly with the three piano sonatas Op.1. Clementi and Field left London in 1802 for an extended European tour, to include Vienna and St Petersburg. The kindly Clementi arranged for Field to study with Albrechstberger, who had taught the young Beethoven. In 1803, in St Petersburg, the two men went their separate ways, Field having become the darling of the Russian aristocracy. ‘Not to have heard Field was regarded as a sin against art and good taste’ said one commentator about the ‘Field fever’ that was sweeping the salons.
His seven concertos contain some of his most strikingly original and beautiful ideas. Notable is the central slow nocturne section in the first movement of No.7 (praised by Schumann), and the storm sequence in No.5, complete with gong, bell, tam tam, trombone and a second piano. The Second Concerto remained in the repertoire of the great virtuosi Pachmann, Mark Hambourg, Nikolai Rubinstein and von Bulow. Chopin and Clara Schumann taught it. It remains one of the most influential and effective early-Romantic piano concertos, and the blueprint for Chopin’s two concertos.

I can’t remember exactly, but I’m pretty sure I listened to this all morning awaiting the call of my high school graduation back in 2018. Haven’t really listened to it since. I live in a different city now, college already behind me, but listening to this I’m briefly transported back to that morning. A warm summer day in my childhood home, awaiting a call and a party later that night where hindsight showed me people I would end up never seeing again. I don’t know what to think of that day, but Field’s music was certainly a high point. Thanks for uploading and keeping it available!

Ashamed to say I had never heard of this composer until he was casually mentioned on Radio 3 the other day. Now I go to this beautiful recording every time I go to the computer. Calming - as I guess a nocturne should be! And I, too, echo the remark above that of course all the players involved should have been credited. But thank you anyway.

for those who might be interested, the pianist is not alone, there is an orchestra which is the Nice Philharmonic orchestra conducted by Marco Guidarini. Can't understand that one should upload a concert or record and not give the full info. And I don't say that because I'm French and it is a french orchestra, just I think one should credit everyone without of course going to the length of the stupid credits we watch nowadays in movies!LOL!

That's very valuable information. Now I know why, with all his beautiful Polonaise-type music, Field's piano concertos have a Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff brio to them. This is an excellent performance of a composer who should be more known and performed. It's interesting how small the world of Western Classical Music was in that a pianist from Dublin should have had such an influence in Warsaw and Moscow.

This sounds like the complete recordings of Field's piano concertos by john O'Connor in the mid 1990s(?) I have been listening regularly to them for 30 years approx and can't understand the amount of ignorance of Field and his work found on KZfaq. He invented the Nocturne while learning the piano and before his first concerto had its debut at the King's Theatre in London in1799 when Field was 19. He taught Chopin to play the piano and Chopin always acknowledged that Field introduced him to the Nocturne form. Schumann in particular is known to have said that it was Field's quiet, intimate and beautiful approach to writing and playing music that should always be considered the world's real introduction to the romantic period. In Russia and Eastern Europe as well as France Field is still held in very high regard. His tragedy was his Irish love of drinking far too much which also led him to be content to compose, play and teach without seeking any sort of fame. Even so his dying words must still be the greatest ever uttered by a composer. When a priest approached his deathbed to offer the last rites he asked Field, "Monsieur, etes vous Catholique ou Calviniste?" to which the Irishman replied , smiling, "Je ne suis que clavisiniste!".

Like so many more Irish people he suffered from the Celtic Curse. Sean O'Riada died from liver failure. He was great loss to music too. However his great contribution to Irish music was to make it universal.

Lovely work, and I'm happy to learn about him here. It's too bad that he burned himself out though. Like Mozart (and some modern musicians) he would have done better with a good manager who controlled his finances and kept him on track. I like the Wikipedia mention of his deathbed pun too.

Viewed soberly in terms of music history, the significance of John Field is limited primarily to his role as the author of the piano music genre of Nocturne, a kind of »musical night piece« that many subsequent composers gratefully took up and brought to perfection. Seen emotionally and aesthetically, John Field can be seen as a kind of Irish equivalent to Frédéric Chopin.

More than that-he was one of the greatest piano teachers of his day, so he influenced his students. An example, in the novel "Lolly Willowes", by Sylvia Townsend Warner, and a favorite of mine, Mrs. Willowes, a pianist, is described as having been taught by a pupil of Field. "She had the jeu perlé". Which suggests something about Field's piano technique. The novel was where I first heard of Field, and it has been a wonderful experience tracking down his music.

true, it's a shame, they fill our heads with composers whose shoe sizes we also know, and not the works worth listening to or rediscovering.

The interesting but ultimately not truly great composers of the nineteenth century tended to know how to end a movement impressively. For example, the end of the first movement of No. 4 here (roughly from 1:53:11 to the end of the movement) is spectacular, but the fifteen minutes preceding it are an unstructured mess. Just my opinion.
