The record books will say that John Isner won that match. But something that must not be forgotten is how the odds were against Mahut in that final set. He was serving second against a better singles player, with a better serve and slightly better returns. And Mahut still managed to hold serve against the ropes for 68 games. That, in my opinion, was what made that odyssey of a game possible. Isner should have won it way before and he was virtually unbreakable. It was Mahut’s gigantic play and mental strength that made this the most epic tennis match in history.

It's not about losing or winning, it's about giving all what they had. None of them gave up and fought for every point. Then, win or lose, they were still both second-rank player that could not pass the next round. That's why they are really two great professionals, they fought till the very end, knowing that they would not go far in the tournament anyway...

I wasn't there for this match, but saw them the following year when they were drawn against each other in the first round again. It was a very different story with Isner winning in straight sets against an injured Mahut - the most remarkable thing about the match for me was spotting Mohamed Lahyani (who umpired their original match) in the crowd! 11+ hours clearly wasn't enough for him. 😁

How exactly is having to win a first round match in a 5th set 70-68 epic? Past 20-20, it's just nonsense, whoever won had a serious disadvantage in the next round (Isner got demolished in the 2nd round of course). As with deuces, I believe at a certain point there should be a tiebreak or no-ad of sorts, this was excruciating to watch

Wimbledon really should take a photo of their pose and should keep it in their historical museum as a memoir. After 100 years our grandchildren would watch this photo after which they will go crazy. Really a historical pose and a historical moment. I don't know why am I feeling goosebumps after watching them pose by the scoreboard.

Mahut deserved way more to win. John Isner only stayed in that match because of his serve. Every rally he lost.

This match is the reason why tiebreaks should decide the outcome in the 5. set ... in every grand slam, especially Wimbledon where the ball does not lose any speed when hitting the ground

What is admirable, it's that they are both "second-rank" players. None of them could hope to reach the finals (John Isner got destroyed the second round), and yet they still fought till the very end.

Unfortunately for us every time a match goes past 6 all in the 5th set we get commentators saying "We are heading into Isner-Mahut territory now". So annoying.
