Sherm Feller was the best PA announcer at Fenway. He also wrote the song, "It's Summer Time, Summer Time", recorded by the Boston family group the Jamies. Sherm lost his false teeth in a taxi cab on the way home from a late night poker game, but he maintained his great diction. Incredible. A true Boston boy, Salute!

I remember this song, because it meant the next three hours or so were going to be heaven on earth!! Sox fan since my folks moved to Boston when I was eleven -- that was 1966. Still rooting for them today from the New Mexico desert 2,000 miles away. Thanks for posting this.

The best pair ever in MLB. John played the Anthem as it was written. No extra notes, fast, like a march. I hate it when I hear singers sing it today and add their own notes and inflections. This is our National Anthem, not a sound board for singers to try to gain attention.

Once...on Memorial Day, in the early 60's at Fenway...John played "Taps"...and I swear...I still get chills just thinking about it! (This anthem should be the ONLY anthem played at every ballpark...........)

This is what I remember watching Red Sox games on WHDH-TV Channel 5 or listening on the radio on WHDH 850 AM. Anthem was done in about 50 seconds and played correctly.

NOBODY BETTER THAN JOHN KILEY..................

I have been to one game at Fenway, over 30 years ago. When John Kiley started playing the organ, that's when I knew I was at Fenway. Wish someone had him playing "O Canada".

I think what I especially enjoyed about Baseball Games was in fact the organ music. Outside of the National Anthem which was always an awesome way to start the game, the little musical riffs that would be done based upon how well the players were playing the game was of great interest. Two strikes and bases loaded the pipe organ music would get sort of mystery suspense like music. A fancy little riff would be played when the players changed places between home and outfield. Home run with bases loaded, play the "Take Me Out To The Ball Game." while the runners slow-jogged to home waving to everyone their ballcaps as the audience cheered and sang along. Good times ...

It also used before the Boston Celtics game at the old Boston Garden.

Under 1 minute for the anthem, perfect.

Nowadays, the current Fenway organist doesn't play the national anthem(s) anymore...always a vocal rendition!

That's the way it's supposed to be done! I loathe self-aggrandizing, attention-seeking, phoney-baloney singers jazzing up the anthem.

That's definitely John Kiley, but definitely not his most stately and moving performance of The Star Spangled Banner. This is rushed and not very heart felt.

+hootenhtn It's actually the correct tempo (as it was intended) and sounds like every other rendition of the SSB by Kiley that I've ever heard.

That is pretty much how Kiley played the anthem, at a rather quick pace. The only other organist to play it this quickly was Lloyd Fox at the Oakland Coliseum.

I have to correct myself. The "official" tempo of the Star Spangled Banner is 104 bpm. This particular rendition comes in at about 120, so yes, it is a bit more upbeat than it should be. lol

I forgot....Jane Jarvis at Shea Stadium had an awesome version. There are a couple of cuts of it on KZfaq.

I love how he got the damn thing out of the way so they could get to the main event. Enough of the faux, forced patriotism--let's play ball!
