John Leguizamo unearths the hidden history of a New York urban institution. The bodega, whose name originates from the Spanish word for “storeroom,” took off in the late 1940s after Latino immigrants recognized the need for products that were authentic to their culture. “Bodegas filled your belly and your heart,” Leguizamo says, adding, “If you’re from New York City, there’s only one place you’re getting half a gallon of milk and a lottery ticket at 2 a.m.”

Uyyy, qué belleza. Yo soy nacido mexicano, raised a bit in Texas and most all my life in Florida, since the late 80's. My family would go shopping for our Mexican specialties at the "tiendas de cubanos". This was way before Wal-Mart started carrying our food. We've also rented Mexican movies there. I've known many LATAM cultures. From new arrivals, to pochos and US born (chicanos), it's been a riot. Saludos mexicanos (American, también) from Florida, y'all. ¡Viva México! 🇲🇽

I was born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn 70 years ago (left in 1974). The neighborhood was all PRs, Jews, Poles and Italians. My family is of Franco Spanish descent. Puerto Rican bodegas were everywhere in the neighborhood. Every PR that came from the island with money would put one up and did well. When I hear the term Bodega now owned by anyone not PR, and not just a grocery store anymore it seems strange. Funny thing is that I have vacationed in PR many times and have never seen a local grocery store called a Bodega there by the locals. They're called "Colmados".

That's not true in my experience. John Leguizamo got into a cab with me by accident one time 20 years ago when he was way more famous. This was at 3 am in lower Manhattan. He didn't have security. He was by himself and rode with me until I got out at my stop and he paid for the cab. Super nice dude.

Italians have some of the most amazing food, but the tomato didn’t arrive to Italy until after the mid 1500’s from Central America. It’s was part of the food items brought over to Europe from the first trips after the “discovery” of the Americas.

“With regard to food shortages. Yes, we did talk about food shortages. And, and it’s gonna be real.” said Biden “The price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia. It’s imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well. Including European countries and our country as well,” continued Biden 🤔

From the Gullah geechee in low country South Carolina who speak a whole different language to the Louisiana/Mississippi/coastal Alabama creoles who have their own language etc each small, southern black town within the various majority black counties across the south, have their own culture own food quite literally if anything Latinos/non black Americans (descendants of USA chattel slavery) don’t even have a real culture besides running away from there homelands
