One finding I had in my tree was my 12th great aunt was convicted in the Salem witch trials. After finding that I looked into the court records on her. Reading her plea of innocence was shaking with the realization that connection.

I was unable to know much about my Latin history (sadly), and I'm not done searching... But I learnt that on my grandfathers, perternal side, 400 yrs ago they moved from Germany to Russia. Then 300 yrs ago they moved to Argentina (where my dads family is from). I was born in Australia and sometimes it's hard to feel included and not invisible as a latino, but I am very very proud of my heritage (my mum is also from el salvador) ❤️

My great aunt was one of the last medicine women of our Nation and was beloved. Since, I have also found my 5th great grandfather was an English Reverend of course in England. His son, my uncle, one of the most highly decorated soldiers of time. He was knighted for the Queen and was even buried at Windsor Castle. There is a brass place to honor the lineage. I relate to John on many levels, including not realizing I was an "Other", until the world around me told me so! Sorry for the and/ors but yeah, i think it can be any of those interpretations. In this case, I'd go with the someone very important and highly revered within their community/tribe.

There was nothing noble about the Spanish conquest. The treacherous conquistadors were encouraged to mix which in most instances r@pe the indigenous women in order to breed the “indian” out of the local population and because the indigenous peoples proved difficult to subjugate. They figured that mixing with them would make them more docile and more loyal to the crown. The resulting admixture is what we called Hispanics or Latinos nowadays, however, they were still seen as inferior by the full blooded European squatters.

The current international Laws are based on the Law which was created by the Spanish Empire for America, because is a legal model of respect of different cultures. That’s why THEY ARE STILL THERE TODAY. And that’s why Spain created grammar and dictionary for local indigenous languages BEFORE the British even had their own dictionary in ENGLISH. The British killed everyone in Australia, that’s why they are white today there. Regarding USA, British arrive to America 100 years LATER than Spain, and they were kicked out 100 before than the Spanish, precisely because the lack of freedom British Colony had. The Hispanic America claimed their independence because France invaded European Spain, and they did not want to be French. British colonies flourished AFTER the independence from UK (due to the always abusive Metropoli-colony relationship), while Hispanic America flourished BEFORE the independence (Spain owned the global market, and the global coin was the Spanish Dollar, making Mexico the richest city in the world because it was the center of the first global shipping line)

I too would love to hear about my ancestry. I know that my mother and my grandmother (mother's side) was Native American Indian but I'm not sure of much more than that. And I know practically nothing of my fathers side. I wouldn't even begin to know how to research either side. How do you know for sure? Everyone is different. For example Jessica Alba's mexican dad is not Spanish descent, but Native because he had the Native American Haplogroup Q

May I offer my suggestions? If you haven't already, take an Ancestry DNA test. The algorithm will then start looking for matches. Your father will, obviously, have parents. Possibly he will have siblings, and most likely have aunts and uncles, who will all have children. You can start looking at the trees for those matches, especially the ones that are "close" (ie 1st & 2nd cousins, etc). As you explore _their_ stories, you'll probably come across clues to your own father's story. It's kind of like radar, where you do pings from multiple angles and it helps you triangulate. Also, if you know / knew your mother, you can review the details for her life around the time you were born. Combining those details with information from close DNA matches, you might see some possible overlap in time and place. That would help you take a step closer. Don't give up hope if it takes a long time to make any progress. Technology is always getting better. And others are doing their own research that might one day pop up as a clue for you. And be sure to use other sites and information sources, including library collections etc. Think of it like a really long scavenger hunt.

@@KimberlyGreen thank you for the suggestions. I have taken an Ancestry DNA test. I think back to the story of not knowing ANYTHING about my father I oftentimes I give up hope. At times, I even convince myself to “just forget” it. But, I ALWAYS get the passion for searching again. I’ve contacted several DNA matches from those who come from the region of my father’s Country to no avail. You’re right, though. Ancestry and technology changes. I keep hoping.

You're disregarding the Revolutionary colonial period when the Spaniards strictly taxed and imposed unfair (e.g. public hangings) and corrupt rule on everyday Mestizos (who were largely discriminated for not being born in Spain). Those taxes, those goods and natural resources, that farm & slave labor went back to replenish and build what is a modern Spain. One cannot dismiss the last 400 years of continuous decimating indigenous populations and the societal pushback they face or the large disparity between the haves and the have nots. While I agree being referred to as a noble Indian is endearing, it's also not enough to forget how much our colonizers robbed us. Moreover, that script is from an earlier colonial age when folks were probably still in "adapting to their surroundings" survival mode.

As in the case with most that cry about "conquest" like Leguizamo he is a direct descendant of the colonizers. Also, why does he go by an English name? Self-hatred is an ugly thing.

Do you think the leader of the S American revolution Simon Bolivar was a native american??? No he was another pure race spaniard. Criollos were white spanish born in americas, some of them decided to revolt against the king and get all the power for themselves following english advice. Native americans and mestizos fought in both armies, spanish army and rebel army. But once they got the independence while Spain fought Napoleon, they lost half of their territory in north america against the english colonialist. Native americans by the way were not classified as inferior by white spanish it was considered that pure native american ancestry was clean heritage. For that reason spanish wrote and noted all noble native american families and clans, aswell as languages. Spanish built universities to teach the children of native american noble families. In fact there are 500 known decendants from the aztec emperor Moctezuma, some of them live in Spain. Mexico is a republic, but if it decides to become a monarchy, the person with more rights to become "queen of Mexico" is Maricarmen de Luna, she lives in Spain as an aristocrath, and decends from both the aztec king Moctezuma and the conquistador of Mexico Hernan Cortes.

@@khansahb8 if he grew up surrounded by Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican culture, food, dancing, dialect, etc., and somehow his parents didn't clarify his origins, it's possible he genuinely thought he was. On my mother's side, there was a lot of lore her father's side about having Irish and Native American herirage, along with a direct line into Germany. My genealogical research has shown me that this was improbable except maybe by individuals married into the family without bearing children or perhaps in a line of very distant cousins that would have no bearing on my genetic makeup. There are, however, lots of British people we all had no idea about who had escaped religious persecution from England. So maybe these people went incognito as other nationalities by the time the American Revolution came about?
