In the wake of Stephen Hawking's death, fellow scientist Professor John Lennox reflects on Hawking's life, work, and beliefs. In 2011, Lennox wrote "God and Stephen Hawking: Whose Design Is It Anyway?" which challenges Hawking’s atheism and demonstrates that far from disproving a Creator God, Hawking’s arguments make his existence seem all the more probable.

HAWKING’S HALLUCINATIONS John Lennox's assessment of Hawking as being "dumb" outside science is spot on. Stephen Hawking’s “theoretical” world was a surreal place where “Grand Design” existed without a grand designer, and natural laws popped into existence without a cosmic Law giver. The highway to Hawking’s godless “Theory of Everything” is paved with unanswered questions, casualty problems, unproven theories, unresolved paradoxes, ever more mysteries, and unverifiable “theoretical” constructs founded on dodgy concepts using fancy math. In reality Hawking’s godless “Theory of Everything” turns out to be a “theory of Nothing”. The scientific world cannot bring “anything” into existence by natural processes and godless causes alone - from scratch: Life and conscientiousness included. Hawkings and his adoring disciples have all failed to grasp the absurdity of a finite humanity - with limited knowledge, understanding and insights - truly believing science can define the ultimate nature of ultimate reality - without God. As rightly stated by the Apostle Paul, “professing themselves to be wise they became fools . . . ever learning and never coming to a knowledge of the truth”

@Wong If one does good deeds simply because one is hoping for heaven as the reward, and if one avoids sins simply because one is scared of going to hell, then heaven will be full of businessman (who knows what is beneficial) and cowards (who knows how to avoid risk). Seeking truth is a live long complex pursuit to improve oneself, not to selfishly benefit oneself. The reason why I distant myself from the Church in the past was because of the high number of followers who think that believing is all there is to it in living a religious life.

what I would say brother is that religion just isn't the answer. Seek Jesus by your self, pray to him and ask him to reveal himself to you. This is what I did and He revealed Himself through a manifestation of His Holy Spirit to where I was brought to believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is in fact lord by the encounter with Him. Religion just can't give you the 100% truth, only God can. Ask for the Holy Spirit to come and He will reveal Jesus to you. God bless brother.

Now you can give an actual and honest chance to Christianity and the Bible mate, it is so misrepresented that I think most of what people think about the Gospel message is wrong. God offers salvation by FAITH alone, apart from your works and hypocritical self-righteousness... Most "Christians" don't trust in God's righteousness, but strive to establish their own, which is what religion is all about. You can know you have this gift, if you believe, and if you are an intellectual type of person, the God of the Bible is logical and his ways are always right. Let me just give you a few things that you believe about Christianity, that are actually wrong: 1. We are all sinners, even as a Christian, we all fall short and don't ultimately deserve to be glorified by God, that is why he saves by FAITH ALONE, so that even the worse people can have hope of eternal life. 2. God absolutely hates the ways of the world, especially when it comes to religions. Jesus spoke mostly against the religious leaders of his day, rebuking their hypocrisy. 3. God hates all idols and images, especially if people bow down to them, which is logical. 4. God deals in absolutes - he is a perfect judge and a perfect saviour - it's up to you to choose in which role you want to meet him - he absolutely has to punish us in hell, but he doesn't want to, so he provided a way, so he is both righteous and just, and merciful at the same time. 5. Your works don't matter, your faith and understanding is what does. I myself was a mindless new ager and hated the Bible and religion, because I believed they are the same, boy was I wrong!

Atheists love and are very protective of their own strange and contradictory quasi-religion. Hawking was not only a fool when commenting about religion, his socio-political beliefs were also very left wing and destructive. Hawking was a prime example as to why intellect and wisdom are two very different qualities. Occasionally these qualities come together in the same person. But in Stephen Hawking, that was certainly not the case.

@Roper122 6 жыл бұрын
No one ever said that it necessarily does hinder. But interestingly Newton tried to use god in his descriptions of planetary orbits, and was quite wrong. So yeah it did affect him negatively. And I imagine Galileo would have something to say on religion and science. That was in Stephen Hawking's book... which I'm guessing you didn't bother to read
@alexanderjosephross
@alexanderjosephross 6 жыл бұрын
Roper122 You say Newton “was quite wrong” regarding God & planetary orbits; hindered scientifically by his faith. What are you referring to? Did you have to read Hawking’s book to get that Galileo would ‘have something to say about science and religion’? I certainly don’t. But it’s a moot point; he was a devout believer in the Bible. "God is known by nature in his works, and by doctrine in his revealed word."

Alex What am I referring to? So you didn't read Hawking's book? That seems odd... you're so quick to criticise him. Newton tried to explain the orbits of the planets, and when he couldn't, he included in his theory the suggestion that god makes adjustments every once and awhile so that it works. Not very scientific, wouldn't you agree? And in fact wrong too. Pretty much everyone on Galileo's day was a believer, its nothing spectacular. But if you want an example of how belief in god hindered science... go no further that what happened to him.
@alexanderjosephross

Roper122 -I didn’t criticise Hawkins once -Newton was wrong about something. Who cares? He’s arguably the greatest scientist in history, and a Bible-believer. -Galileo was a Bible-believer, his murder doesn’t change that.

Alex Oh really? You just came here to write random quotes? Where'd the quotes come from? Newton was wrong about something, because of his religious beliefs... the exact opposite of what your quote says. You should read up on Galileo, I'm not saying he was religious, in fact I made that point clear.

John has and shows great respect for Hawking as a scientist but we can have respect and still disagree without undermining the person. But as he says scientists do make statements that are not scientific. He doesn't undermine Hawking as a person but shows that the statements he made in his books are simply not true and were a matter of his opinion based on his philosophy (which he said is dead). Just because a scientist says something profound or not don't give it weight or authority, science is supposed to be evidence based and observed. Nonsense is still nonsense even if it is spoken by a scientist. The Book "God an Stephen Hawking" is a great little read. Well worth a look!

Atam: Very parroted and completely inaccurate statement. Mythology is what it is because there is absolutely no evidence to support the fictional god-like characters provided by societies in the past. Also, there was next to no similarities between Jesus and the mythological deities, so put the film Zeitgeist out of your head, because it is false, including by atheist scholar standards. Jesus Christ, however, has a great deal of evidence to support not only His existence, but His death, as well as the fact that many people, both His supporters and even some of His detractors, believed in His resurrection, which was spoken of immediately after the fact, and written of in most of these people's lifetimes, including by figures and historians of the time outside of the Bible, as determined by current experts in the field from all backgrounds and faiths, including atheism.

The ex-"Christians" I hear on youtube make it clear they were never actually Christians, deeming their critiques of their former religion non-applicable. Dr. Michael Shermer is a perfect example. He makes fun of the Trinity because he simply doesn't even understand the concept, and I'm not convinced he wants to. Again, I'm just one voice with one specific case, so take from it what you will. Thanks for the good question mark, Douglas.

It's a tragedy, not that he died, but that he died before he turned to Jesus. The idea, promoted by pseudo-intellectual atheists, that God and science oppose one another is utterly laughable. Isaak Newton and Leibnitz tried to explain this to their fellows. As Lennox put it, the first job God gave to Adam and Eve was to do biological taxonomy. God LOVES science. In fact he is the greatest scientist of all, and he wanted us to study his wonderful creation from day one.

Jaikee Berlin, pray and ask God to reveal to you the truth that the Old Testament contains copies of much older writings (such as the Epic of Gilgamesh). Also ask God to show you if the Theory of Evolution is accurate. Then show us how honest you are. Either come back later to say: * God doesn't answer prayers. * God confirmed that what non-believers tell you is true. * You went and studied the evidence and now understand the Bible contains myths.

Jaikee Berlin. If God loves science so much as you claim he does why didn't God tell us all about the universe in the Bible? Black holes, other galaxies (billions of them) that the sun was the centre of the solar system, dark matter, that the sun works on nuclear fusion, that stars are suns but just far away. The reality is that men wrote the Bible and those men who wrote the Bible understood less than a five year old does now.

good sir, for those of us who perpetually seek truth, it is never too late to embrace truth even, and especially when, it contradicts our comfort zone or our previous notions. My only encouragement to you is to study the claims of the Bible and if you take seriously investigating if God is, I believe that would require praying to said God and being humble enough to ask Him to help you realize Him and understand Him and His words. I do firmly believe the Bible is God's word, and I came from opposite side of the tracks as a boy raised by a single atheist mother who encouraged us to seek the truth and feel free to come to whatever conclusion, and I myself became an atheist for many years. I ended up a believer in Jesus because the truth couldn't be suppressed by my false reasonings and warped perspective any longer. It became too obvious to me. I could list reasons and experiences and truths and prophesies, but I won't. I simply encourage you not to abandon looking into Christianity and giving it some humble examination and pursuit to see if what the Bible teaches is the truth, because whether we like the truth or not, or even believe in it, we ultimately will be dealing with it nonetheless. Thanks for your time, sorry I wrote a lengthy comment. :/

Funny how some (SOME) atheists are like snowflake SJW. Prof. Lennox offered the highest praise to Hawking as a scientist, while at the same time offered some insightful and necessary criticisms of Hawking's more philosophical conclusions. But like SJW, some atheists commenters will just not put up with ANY criticism of their hero Hawking and their sacred belief in atheism. C'mon guys, if you have problems with something specific that Lennox said then interact with that and perhaps a decent conversation can begin. Sure Lennow is skeptical of Hawking's proposal and his overreaching philosophical conclusions. But isn't skepticism an attitude embedded in the very nature of science?

Here we go. “You claim…” I claim? Seriously? Perhaps you need to actually read my comment again-this time with the motive to actually understand it and not be overly defensive! “Hawking's philosophical conclusions are overreaching…” Lennox (and others both atheists and theists share that conclusion) argued that, not me, though I see the validity of that criticism. You simply provide a classic illustration of the point I made when you state that I “defend the religious position”! Man o man! What “religious position” did I defend again? Did I even make any? Why be so defensive? Why not engage the dialogue in a way that shed light than simply burn more fire (as SJW tend to do)? I’m tempted to return the compliment, “Get real, fool.”

Two man were crucified with Christ, one mocked him while he was dying and the other scolded him saying Jesus did nothing wrong but he did and so did the other guy, then he turned to Jesus and said remember me when you enter into your kingdom, Jesus told him this day you will be with me in paradise. God is merciful and you should think this way too. Many muslims are having dreams of Jesus visiting them and saving them, why? Because God is merciful and many do not know how to read so God shares with them the love that he has for them.

Who am I? One thinking individual who does not turn his thinking abilities off (which is by the way our only tool for understanding the world) in favor of what his society or the religion he was born into says. Repeating somethings from bible won't give you any advantage in arguing sth. Muslims, Hindus and all other believers can repeat some phrases from their holly !!! books and it won't give them any advantage as it didn't give you any Even if we believe that jesus was a real man in history and the story happened as you rephrased, again it won't prove anything. at its best somebody told sth to somebody else and then they died. again you will hear similar stories from believers of other religions in favor of their belief system. Will those stories have any value for you or make you change your mind? About dreams: they prove absolutely nothing, NOTHING. All it takes is to eat too much or not enough before going to bed, have some hormones in action or think about sth for a while to create a dream at night. Do you still remember your teenage dreams? Are they proof for any divinity? Besides, again there are thousands of Muslims who are convinced that Christians are converting to Isam because they are discovering truth through dream, revelation or other means. None of these can be presented as proof to support this or that belief system But returning to the main topic: It is unethical and nonsensical to after some brilliant person's death turn out and say: Now he meets the God and finds out he was wrong all his life, or gets punished ... None of you know or have any means to understand what happens after death. You don't have a single tool to examine if your after death stories have any truth in them (beside dreams and dusty ancient books of course) If you have a leg to stand on, face these brilliant minds while they are alive and prove them wrong. Or better ask your God to reveal himself in an undeniable way and put an end to these arguments. Until that day, please be ethical enough, don't pretend to know thing you don't have slightest idea about and above all stop talking about what happens to these people after their death when they can't defend themselves

What you are saying is that Lennox literally came out days after Hawking died and said " He was a good scientist, but totally wrong about god " Why bother? Why not show some class and just say he was a good scientist? Better still, why not keep your mouth shut and say nothing at all? No... Lennox couldn't help himself. Very, very, poor indeed. Roper122 , Hawking's denial about the creation, to me, is just an indirect proof of inflated ego as a human being or a total lack of intuition or strategic thinking. A good tactician but a poor strategist... Newton vs Einstein.... one tactically comes up with a predictive approach to gravity without explaining it, the other one explains it... I am not impressed at all by those world-class tacticians who tries to justify bad strategies with genius tactics. The same can be found in chess. Master tacticians who can justify sometimes bad positions gainst weaker opponents with grandiose tactics... Hawking is just that... a master of cheapos (chess term)... He's going to face his creator soon.... God, the perfect tactician and perfect strategist...

The annoying background noises in the first minute make this unpleasant and confusing. Why would you make a you tube video if you didn't have a fairly quiet place to make it?

I like the way the young interviewer put it, namely, it is a category mistake to confuse agency with law.

For instance the law of gravitation as formulated by Newton may indeed more or less accurately describe the agency of gravitational pull : what it does not do is prescribe that gravitational pull is the only relevant agency. In a football match, some freewilled agencies are interfering with Earth's gravitational pull on the ball and therefore the actual movements of the ball will not illustrate a good graph of purified gravitational pull, most of the time, except when someone drops the ball from his head to the ground in order to shoot a penalty or reenter the ball. As soon as then his feet touch the ball, it is no longer just illustrating the law of gravitation, because it is no longer just under the agency of Earth's gravitational pull.

John's salient question: "Where does science point? -Does it point to God or atheism or nowhere?" -It's one of those big questions which is easily hijacked by any world view.

Jesus is not theology ,he is GOD! Science proves GOD exist . There could be no science without GOD! God lets us use his science to discover what has always been and to better our lives !

"The idea of the Universe creating itself is absurd." The idea is that our local universe came into existence at the big bang but that the energy/matter/forces from which that sprang has always existed. The only differences between that belief and theism are (1) we have evidence to support our beliefs and not just ancient books of fairy tales and (2) we do not presuppose that the eternally existing "stuff" has a personality.

+Isaac Newton "(1) we have evidence to support our beliefs and not just ancient books of fairy tales" There is not even close to sufficient evidence to warrant belief in the triune God Christians claim to believe in. And I am not talking about arguments; but _evidence_ . There is not even a good definition of what the 3 persons in one being of YHWH / Holy Spirity / Jesus, is. "- Can you give me evidence for your god, please?" I don't have a god. "You clearly don't understand the Big Bang Theory" I understand it much better than you do. Try reading some actual 21st century cosmology texts or peer reviewed papers and then getting back to me. I will get you started with some easily accessible descriptions which all back my point. curious.astro.cornell.edu/about-us/101-the-universe/cosmology-and-the-big-bang/general-questions/570-where-did-the-matter-in-the-universe-come-from-intermediate www.space.com/25126-big-bang-theory.html www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-myth-of-the-beginning-of-time-2006-02/ Now, you can continue to simply claim that I am wrong, but I am providing _evidence_ to back my points. Do you see the difference?
