He was a bad ass. He hit the jumbotron in the Superdome in the 1976 Pro Bowl. I later found out that the screen sat 27 stories above the playing field. Ironically, he never had a punt blocked until the super bowl game that the Raiders won in 1977. Fred McNeil of the Vikings got him. But what a leg.

How many people had the opportunity to see Ray in College ?? He was a great punter but a even BETTER defensive back making a school record 8 interceptions his senior year producing ALL AMERICAN first team Status in 1972. I lived in Memphis, TN and was a HS punter, it was unbelievable intertainment to watch Ray Guy in pre-game warm ups consistently punting the ball above the Liberty Bowl Lights, it would disapear in night time darkness only to reappear 70 plus yards downfield. A memory I will always cherish, Thanks Ray you the MAN !!!!!!!

I was lucky enough to see him kick in college at USM. They were playing Ole Miss who is my favorite and my dad’s favorite team at home in Hattiesburg which is a about 45 minutes from where we lived. I bought the tickets for my dad’s birthday with the money I was making from cutting grass as a kid so our seats were in the nosebleed area. Ray Guy came on to punt from USM’s end zone and he crushed it. The ball went above our heads and landed around the 10 yard line of Ole Miss and bounced out of the back of the end zone. It’s the greatest kick I’ve ever seen.

There is no way ,for people who never saw Ray Guy play, to really comprehend what he was to the Raiders and to the game of football.Ray Guy was a WEAPON.Guy was the Raiders 12th defensive player with his ability to determine field position.His soaring kicks and deadly accuracy are legend.''Hangtime'' and ''Coffin Corner''as far as I know,were terms that were invented to describe what he was doing.The voting process is painfully biased.It is to the shame of the NFL that the great Ray Guy waits.

Usually for other games it was bathroom break. And he was a really good athlete. He's the first punter, and I think Jan Stenerud is the first kicker.

Obviously because of my age Ray Guy is well before my time...but looking at the stats...I don't see why Jan Stenerud is in the Hall of Fame and not Ray Guy Come to think of it...why is Jan Stenerud in the Hall at all? 66.8 percent of his field goals made? Terrible beyond 50 yards and one season he missed 6 extra points! If you're gonna make it as a kicker you had better be pretty damn special...looking at Ray Guy I can see it...Jan Stenerud is a mystery to me.

Jan Stenerud was a FG kicker and a placekicker, and the fact he put points on the board and won games may account for part of the reason. I thought Stenerud was the best during his era in the NFL. I can still remember those 4pm games on NBC with Curt Gowdy at the mic in the late 1960's, and Stenerud booming those kickoffs out of the end zone for a touch back. He was great. The KC-Oakland rivalry back then was incredible. Ray Guy was certainly great - no question - but it's a little more difficult to quantify his value in the stats, but he should have been a 1st ballot entry. You had to have seen him play to know his true worth. He was somewhat unique in a sport and during an era where kickers were not generally liked or respected by the position players. They weren't considered athletes by some of the players. Their jerseys didn't get bloody or dirty, they didn't suffer broken bones, cracked ribs, knee injuries.
@RobertBalto
@RobertBalto 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesanthony5681 I appreciate your perspective on both players. I'm born in '84 and while I really enjoy football history and like learning about older players, of course both Stenereud and Guy are before my time. So I'm just looking purely at their statistics. Stenereud did lead the league in FG% 4 times...but he did have some seasons that were really poor (1 season under 50%) and really his field goal kicking outside of 40 yards is not very good. Booming kickoffs into touchbacks is definitely an asset, especially before the rule changes that moved the kickoffs forward for player safety reasons. And also, if I remember correctly, you used to get the ball at the 20 on a touchback, rather than the 25. His career FG%, while terrible by today's standards, was quite good for the era that he played in...so I guess I'd probably have to have lived in the era he played to really understand his place in history. As for Ray Guy: 7 Pro Bowls, had a season where he finished 4th in MVP voting. I heard all about his ability to handle errant snaps, his amazing hang time, ability to pin teams deep. I think I know more about him because the old Raiders' players never shut up about how great their teammates were, the games that were "stolen" from them...and actually just never shut up in general. But I will say that a fellow Raider, Shane Lechler, netted about 5 more yards for his career than Guy did...and I sincerely doubt he will get much Hall of Fame consideration. But yeah, those are my thoughts, you would know more having lived through those eras.
@jamesanthony5681
@jamesanthony5681 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobertBalto Stats can be misleading, and like someone told me years ago when it came to certain players, you had to have seen the guy play to appreciate his true value. That's certainly the case with Ray Guy. No owner other than Al Davis would have made Guy a no. 1 pick. The game is much different today, much less focus on the run and more on the pass, obviously, than it was in the '60's to the '80's. That was the 'kill the quarterback' era, and QB's like Brady, Rogers, and Brees would not have lasted as long, nor would they have put the numbers that they did, had they played back in those days. All 3 are great, I should add. When you compare the stats of John Unitas to Aaron Rogers, its not even close. Or John Elway to Tom Brady, same thing. Tougher eras. Christ, the 1985 Bears defense (greatest defense ever) ate up QB's. That was fun football to watch.
@RobertBalto
@RobertBalto 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesanthony5681 That is true about Al Davis. I also think he kind of lost touch towards the end of his life. But his impact on football is beyond question, and obviously Ray Guy was a great pick. We're in the same boat about comparing eras. My all-time favourite player is Dan Marino. I think it's unfortunate that future fans will probably look at stats and think that someone like Eli Manning or Philip Rivers were on the same level (or maybe better). But that's just the way it is. I would have loved to watch the great teams and great players of the past...and I do recall Steve Young and Troy Aikman pretty much getting concussed into retirement and Marino's body breaking down because of all the punishment he took. Players now (especially quarterbacks) are more protected. But I do still think many of them are great and would be great in pretty much any era. To me, someone like Patrick Mahomes, had he played 30 years ago would be comparable to a John Elway and vice versa. If Elway played today, he'd be similar to Mahomes. Both should be appreciated. And same applies to all positions.

@Navdan87 Yes Hartman is a fool and should keep his trap shut. The only Ray is not in the H0F is because he played for the Raiders. There's still a lot of twisted football writers still living who get to vote for the HoF's. I love Lechler as our punter and he is one of the all time great punters but he is still No.2 to Ray Guy.
