true as you say being an ex NPP but but most often when you are part of a group the leader's say is final.. you can make contribution but if its not taken you have to tow the leaders line or leave... so he probably thinks he has ideas which weren't considered so going independent would give him the opportunity to implement his ideas if he wins...
