I remember when I was such a huge JM fan in high school and introduced my friend to him. I'd been listening to all his stuff for months. Then she shows me this song and I'm freaking out, because I didn't know it existed. How did she do that? (This is before the net was this heavy with Mayer stuff).

it could easily be a joke. as a performer in small coffee shops, its easy and fun to put people on the spot like that. im not sure about where this recording is from, but thats what it sounds like to me. i used to do it all the time.

His obviously dedicating the solo to Jeff not the song, the lyrics are definitely not referring to his relationship with a man called Jeff.

Here's my two cents: I think Jeff might be a friend who was dealing with a situation like the song describes. He might not have released it on an album for fear it would cause a media uproar (like it seems to have in the comments of this video!). Great song, either way.

You are undeniably right, if it weren't for the few people that actually are good and caring beings. Don't forget the billions of lives, if not more over the years, that have been lost because of religious wars and persecution. Over land, power, money, etc. In my own opinion I believe we have truly gained nothing from it over the years. If we would all just come together and put our differences aside then this world would have been a better place. The root of all evil, greed of the people.
