John McDermott The Last Rose of Summer (LIVE) "The Irish Tenors Live From Belfast" DVD (2000) click "Show more" to see lyrics.
Lyrics:
Tis' the last rose of summer left blooming alone
All her lovely companions are faded and gone
No flower of her kindred, no rosebud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes, or give sigh for sigh
So soon may I follow, when friendships decay
And from love's shining circle the gems drop away
When true hearts lie wither'd and fond ones are gone
Oh, who would inhabit this bleak world alone?

To this day I don't know how John got through this song. He was singing and crying. I'm sure Hope and Peter heard him singing their song.

This is heart wrenching. The pain that he is feeling he puts into the song so you are hearing his soul. Hard to watch and listen and not start dropping those tears yourself. Always sings from the heart, our John. Lovely tribute to his Mom and Dad.

This is one of the songs that is my mother`s favourite. She passed away late last month at the age of 82. She was survived by her 7 Chinese children and 11 grandchildren. She was a devoted Christian and we are blessed with her FAITH in GOD and many have become followers. We are very delighted that we have been chosen by GOD. Rest In Peace mom. May God`s LOVE shine on every body, for there is ONLY ONE GOD and His Son Jesus Christ. ONLY ONE church that is open to ALL PEOPLE on earth with open arms through its many doors and windows. Please include my mom YUNG in your prayer. With love from a Chinese family who go to the Evangelical Church in Kowloon City HONG KONG. GOD bless you

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, To pine on the stem; since the lovely are sleeping, Go, sleep thou with them; Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bed Where thy mates of the garden Lie senseless and dead. This recording always gets me. Yes, it's beautiful, but John also "gets" the song in a way that most people just don't. My Grandma Deese lived to almost 103. She outlived everyone in her family, my Grandpa, and two of their children. SHE was the Last Rose of Summer in the same way that John's Mother was.
