Dr. John McDougall was drawn to medicine because of his own health “fate.”
At 18, he suffered a massive stroke and was an anomaly to the doctors who wanted to explore how this could happen to someone so young. This inspired his own journey to become a doctor, which eventually led Dr. McDougall and his wife, Mary, to Hawaii as doctors on a sugar plantation. What he saw there completely changed the course of his medical practice.
Those first-generation elders who had come from China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines were the healthiest and most vibrant people. They were still active, on no medications, and still in bodies fit for movement. However, it was their children and grandchildren - those second and third generations - that were struggling in their health.
Why? They had adopted a western diet of meat, dairy, and processed foods.
The secret to health, Dr. McDougall discovered, was the power of STARCH. Those healthy islanders who were vibrant and healthy subsisted on a diet comprised mostly of rice, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits.
So simple and beautiful, right?
Well, so is this inspiring conversation from one of the giants. He’s been a mentor for decades and it was an honor to talk about the past, present, and future with Dr. John McDougall.

White rice has a healthy omega 6 to omega 3 ratio while brown rice does not have a healthy ratio. Beans and potatoes have a good ratio but many nuts and seeds other than walnuts and flaxseed have an unhealthy ratio. This is where McDougall shines over Fuhrman. Fuhrman shines over McDougall by stressing the cancer healing advantages of foods such as berries, greens, broccoli, mushrooms, celery, and carrots.

Dr. Mcdougall convinced me to go vegan and eat starch while all the people around me were eating the low carb meat diet and laughing at me. They were telling me I can’t get all my nutrition on a vegan diet especially protein and calcium. They are all on medicines and I am not. Who is laughing now.

I'm glad you are getting better and it's great you are off metoprolol. I came off atenolol which is a beta blocker. My resting heart rate was over 100 the many years ago I started it, and I came off not long after it was found beta blockers don't reduce mortality rate. My resting heart rate is back to what it was when I was healthy in my teens and 20s, and my blood pressure is 115/85 so I have a little work to get the 85 to be less than 80. I have kale on my shopping list and have eaten it and spinach frequently. I can eat 4 ounces a day, in two 'meals'. I microwave without water for about 2 minutes and it makes it fine for me.

WFPB is getting another boost at my Surgeons office. I fell off my bike on a 500 mile ride and broke my arm and had to have surgery to fix it. I am 3 1/2 wks post surgery and already am back riding my bike. The Nurse and Dr. are blown away at how fast my 65 year old body is healing. When I told them I only eat plants they were very interested and ask many questions about what I eat. I am off to Iowa to ride across the State at RAGBRAI in a couple weeks and feel I will be ready. Thanks to all these amazing Doctors who keep talking about Plant based eating.

Love the content as always! Appreciate you both so much for helping so many sick people heal in America. When I don’t eat enough whole grains for two weeks, I tend to develop cuts around the corners of my mouth which directly relates to B deficiency. Now I incorporate whole grains (rolled oats, millet, amaranth, brown rice, black rice, red rice, sorghum, and other gluten free grains) in my meals at least twice a day. I usually pick two to three kinds for each of the two meals. My cuts tend to go away in three days. Whole grains are so important to our diets.

Read Daniel 1:8-16 and Daniel 10:2-3….. There are much earlier sources for the best way for humans to eat. Too bad we can’t walk in the Garden of Eden with every fruit and vegetable available to us for our consumption …. It’s when we were banished that we had to work for our food by the sweat of our brow and some humans decided to be lazy and eat what is easiest …. And least nutritious !!! It’s hard work to grow your own food or expensive to buy organic food grown by others.

I love you both dearly. Would you be able to reach out to young adults, 20, 30's and 40's to help them eat healthy at a reasonable price? Thank you

Thank you RIP and Dr. McDougall, I appreciate all the ‘food’ for thought. I wonder what we would have thought had we been around for the ice age? Who or what would we have attributed the change to? As one who believes that God created not only the heavens and the earth but man and the heart soul and mind of man-he will fulfill his plan in his time. Does that mean we do nothing and care not for the earth and all that inhabit it-absolutely not as He said love your fellow neighbor. All that being said I don’t think we have us much control as we think we do, for we are not the alpha and omega. Remember the soul of a man is what matters…should we pay attention perhaps there will be less greed and more charity and compassion.

how does starch affect the diabetic in your opinion, the rise of glucose levels?

It’s combination- I find it hard to do without oil unfortunately It’s satieting even though I know I slowly need to control fat portions of oil So used to oil and feel no taste of food otherwise I also noticed they want people to use organic foods which is troublesome too Will be slow speed transition

But, but, but, …. What about all the oxalates in foods like potatoes?? Any thoughts about the impact of this oxalate-laden diet on health?

I tried 4 months of plant based eating along with 16/8 schedule. I am disappointed my cholesterol went from 204 to 248

That’s interesting. I thought my cholesterol would drop but it didn’t. Dr. Doug Lisle discusses this in one of his videos.. it’s genetic but we should still be healthier on the plant based diet.

Some say too much starch promotes cancer. Any data on this? No doubt it works for heart disease but what about cancer,

We eat rice almost daily, but 2 weeks ago, a friend sent me article that rice has high arsenic. Is this something we should be concerned of? Since then, I tried cooking with other grains like quinoa, buckwheat, millet but its not the same. I am on a starch based diet, we eat rice with beans

Doesn't eating starchy foods like potatoes raise sugar levels and cause glucose spikes?
@Nina-hk7ub
@Nina-hk7ub Жыл бұрын
Yes, of course but once you lose weight (fat), you’ll get rid of the insulin resistance so it won’t matter if blood sugar increases.

If fish and seafood contain all those contaminants as you mentioned then how do you explain the Japanese living such long healthy lives and they eat fish and seafood on a regular basis?

Because their main meal is lotsa rice, sweet potatoes, vegetables, fruits. Fish is not the main course, just a condiment.

@@jgrysiak6566 John clearly exaggerates. There are publications which show that omega-3 index correlates with longevity. Average omega-3 content in erythrocyte membranes is ~4%, and in Japan ~10%- And this difference explains 4-5 years in lifespan.
