No it doesn’t not really! He’s a working musician and a dirty old man ! And who wouldn’t be? It’s a lonely life on the road….. Whether or not under-grads can “make the grade” musically to suit an ego of this guys enormity, they have “the goods”’in another way! I met Mcglogjlin back stage when I was 21 and my cousin 22, the only reason we were entertained was cos of our 20 year old girlfriends incredible beauty. She tried to talk to him about her violin and he just tried to get in her pants! He then begrudged to talk to us and I said “I notice you still have very self consciously ‘spiritual’ or ‘turban-envy’ titles to your songs but after I lived in India for months and months as a teenager and had life defining experiences there I’ve become a bit cynical about any Idea the culture there is any more or less tuned-than anywhere” He butted in “Well if you’re cynical then I am SORRY for you!!!!” My eyes pricked with utterly shocked tears and my cousin “squared-on” to our (prior to the encounter”) musical hero, saying “that’s a bit MACH!” ( he sounded normal til the last word came out ‘cockney’ (London street accent) I knew if Mr Guitar had forgotten his manners one more time his lip and nose would nave been all over his face!” I said to my cousin “let’s go” we said to our girlfriend what are you doing?” She said (with “Get me away from THIS CREEP!” eyes) “yes, me too”. Remember “everyone” every little tin god nearly always has his feet, like the rest of us, made of clay x x x

Andreas Devig Very nice observation. It's a very nice counterpoint adjustment, in which the rhythm and melody section are in some interesting form complimentary to one another, the bass creates tension and the piano resolves the tension.

That bent note almost signals the bass player to duel solo with him :)

What I love about him is he fully embraced another completely foreign culture and approached Jazz Fusion with them on their own terms. No pastiche for Jon. It was the real deal. So much respect for the man. Luv and Peace.

Keeping up with John in his prime?! That's a hell of an accomplishment in and of itself. Damn.

He has also magical collaborations with the late great Larry Coryell. John is the greatest living guitarist according to Jeff Beck who is no slouch.

Trust me she is not really that good as you're praising her. Quite bad even she is. You haven't listened to much Indian classical I can tell. I can give you some extra ordinary stuffs if you want.

I'd be interested in your "quite extraordinary stuffs". I HAVE been listening to Indian classical music since 1970 or so, here in America it was difficult to get ANYTHING except for Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan when LP's (those round black 12" things) were all you could get. I sure have a lot of them... The last 15 years or so it's opened up, so I do know about Kartik Seshadri, Indrajit Banerjee etc. My current faves would be Kala Ramnath, Anoushka and Debashish Bhattacharya (yes, I play guitar & Steel guitar, fo-ever too). But I don't know much about flute players and vocalists, and I SURE can't afford to buy 10 cd's to get 2 great ones, which is about the average. So any recommendations would be great! I tend to like the spooky dark stuff, NOT the fluffy intentionally-always-happy music (Which DOES kinda rule out Ravi's music until he got his mind out of hock to that "Ambassador of Indian Music" crap and began PLAYING again in the '80's (he's said so himself) Thanks.

That vocal thing she did is called ALAP. And the flute intro is pure Indian. You're welcome. It's neither jazz nor Indian Classical,i it's kind of a fusion. John has been doing it for quite a while.

of course, it's fusion. Quite all contemporary western music is "fusion" and McLaughlin did "jazz fusion" since early 1970. Also the Shakti project is fusion. Here we can listen Bansuri, a bit of raga, jazz, electric guitar, some electronics......

Totally agree. Do note that 'vitiate' means "spoil or impair the quality or efficiency of". But you meant invigorated, vitalized, inspired, animated, potentiated, enabled, potentiated etc. And yeah pretty amazing vitality and joy in the present for a man his age too.

Apologies Jeff, How right you are, I had not read my comment until you pointed it out, and of course I made a typo, the word should have read "invitiate" meaning purified, this was meant to be a reference to the lowering of technical abilities, and acceptance of lower standards brought about in composition today by the mundane, and the concomitant search to " purify the waters" so to speak. Have you heard L Shankar's album Eternal Light? Although predominantly a violin album it features some wonderful singing and one track in which his full 5 and a half octave range is used to full effect.

Thanks for your insight, never knew it had a negative connotation. I play alto sax and love to mix it up with band mates by playing a little ahead or behind the beat. It keeps them on their toes so to speak. Are you a musician?

These young players are obviously talented. Here comes the "but".....Apart from the flautist, McLaughin's choices are all unique and brilliant, while the young musicians make far less beautiful rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic choices. The vast difference between a genius and an amateur player.
