If John actually met Tony Timpa's mama and she said nobody cared about what happened to her son, John knows the reason why is that the police lied to her about what happened to her son and the bodycam videotape did not come out until 2 years later. So, the police were never held accountable. So, it is not that nobody cared, it's that the White cops did exactly what they did in the George Floyd case; namely, they lied to the public, but in Mr Floyd's case, a little girl took out her cellphone and recorded what actually happened and when her video went viral, it contradicted what the police said; namely, that a perp had a medical emergency while being arrested. Stop it, John, you are being disingenuous. QED

McWhorter is on an ego trip; this man has a PhD in linguistics and yet I don't see any understanding of semantics, pragmatics, or implicature in any of his arguments. His visit to Real Time just furthered his notion of the ego trip he's on cause he got his ego blown up further by Bill Maher.

The McWhorter/Coates 2008 bloggingheads chat was so amicable, I'm always surprised to hear John say the two were sniping at each other at around the same time. Seemed like a perfectly polite exchange. Maybe that's just today's standards blurring my judgment, and what passes for a polite tone in 2021 didn't 13 years ago.

I find Mr. McWhorter's opinions totally reasonable. I think the perspective presented in this video should be heard. It's different than mine, but I want to hear opinions different than mine especially when they seem to be averred from a good-faith position, which is the case for me here. That said, I totally expected a certain ironic result of his statements to show up in the comments, and sure enough, there they were. What I am hearing from his commentary is a push back against what he perceives as social pressure for his opinions around race to be able to be conflated with, let's face it, people sharing his skin phenotype. Then I look in the comments and what's the first thing I see? "...in a time when the black activists are filled with hate and self-destruction." How do you go and praise the "voice of reason" of Mr. McWhorter and turn around and conflate the feelings and motivations of a whole subsection of people? Did you listen to his talk and try to understand where he is coming from, or did you just cherry-pick your own message out of it that agrees with yours? To me he is clearly determined to push back against broad brushes. So if you are going to praise him, it would seem to make sense that you would be inspired to not use a broad brush, no?

You have a point. I used to love hip hop but on the whole, you could argue it contributed to the dumbing down of our culture. If it's true that art inspires reality, you can say hip hop should carry some blame for a lot of the resist the police machismo that results in so many unnecessary deaths, in homophobic attacks, in anti-Semitism, anti white racism, anti Asian racism, and, of course, sexism. Even a lot of the positive hip hop that people point out has similar messaging in at least two or three of the previously mentioned areas, with the added issue that many of the "positive" rap groups promote a pseudo history that is basically the black version of the Aryan mythos from 1930s Germany

@Sound Logic, bro, cut the bamboozle, a jury of officer Chavin's peers determined that Mr Floyd's death was caused by officer Chavin. Why? Because expert testimony that there was no plausible evidence that suggested otherwise was believed. Specifically, expert medical testimony vouched that the level of fentanyl in Mr Floyd's system did not cause his demise, but rather that the role played by officer Chavin did. End of story. Yeah, the media was supposed to whip up a fury over Mr Timpa's death with no evidence of foul play? You are funny if not just plain dumb. Question: how was the media supposed to make a case with nothing to contradict the official police lies? That is really a rhetorical question since I know you have no answer. End of story. There actually is a disproportionate rate of unarmed Black perps being murdered based on their percentage of the population, but of course, more Whites are murdered in raw numbers. So, it matters not; we can also set aside all your bogus mind reading. Let's just stipulate that too many unarmed perps are being murdered, Black and White. So, let's hope BLM can stop the carnage.
